Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr. (1915- ) is an attorney who became the first director of the Peace Corps in 1961 and served in that capacity until 1966. He also served as the director of the Office of Economic Opportunity from 1964 to 1968 and as the United States Ambassador to France for two years. In 1972, Sargent Shriver became George McGovern's Vice Presidential running mate. Shriver later sought the Democratic nomination for President in 1976. - Local Identifier:
