Ralph David Abernathy (1926-1990) was a civil rights leader and close associate of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Abernathy served as Secretary-Treasurer and then Vice President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) under King's tenure as President of the organization. After King's assassination in 1968, Abernathy succeeded him as SCLC President and served in that capacity until 1977. In 1968, Abernathy helped organize the Poor People's Campaign (PPC) March on Washington, D.C. - Local Identifier:
