Rev. Joseph E. Lowery (1921- ) is a United Methodist minister and civil rights leader. In 1955, he helped lead the Montgomery bus boycott to protest the city's policy of racial segregation on its public transit system. In 1957, Lowery helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and later served as the organization's president from 1977 to 1997. - Local Identifier:
