Benny T. Smith (d. 1998) became the first African American to serve in the office of a United States Senator from Georgia when he began working as an aide to Senator David P. Gambrell in 1971. Smith had been active in civil rights organizations and community service groups in Atlanta during the 1960s. Then in the early 1970s, he helped organize a day labor service on Auburn Avenue that assisted minorities in finding jobs. In 1987, he served as president of the Auburn Avenue Merchants and Professionals Association, which worked to protect long-standing businesses in the Auburn Avenue area and protect the historically significant neighborhood from being overrun by new development. - Local Identifier:
