Portrait of engineer, businessman, and philanthropist Lemuel P. Grant, in Atlanta, Georgia.
Lemuel P. Grant (1817-1893) was an engineer, businessman, politician and philanthropist. In 1848, Grant became president of the Georgia Railway and later served as president of the Southern Pacific Railroad. During the Civil War, Grant served as the chief engineer of the Confederate Department of Georgia and was responsible for fortifying the city of Atlanta. Grant was later elected to the Atlanta City Council in 1872 and to the Fulton County Commission in 1886. In 1882, Grant donated one hundred acres of his land in southeast Atlanta to the city for the creation of Atlanta's first park, which is named Grant Park in his honor. - Local Identifier:
