Washington, a city in Wilkes County, is located in the east-central portion of Georgia. The area was first settled by Stephen Heard in 1773 and became the site of a fort during the Revolutionary War. A town was subsequently laid out in 1780 and named in honor of George Washington. The first cotton mill in the south was founded here in 1810 and the city is still known for its concentration of antebellum homes. - Local Identifier:
