William J. Northen (1835-1913) was an educator, agricultural reformer, and progressive politician from Georgia. Early in his career he taught at the Mt. Zion Academy in Hancock County, Georgia, and eventually became the school's headmaster. After retiring from teaching, he established himself as a leading scientific planter and helped establish the Hancock County Farmer's Club. He later served in the Georgia General Assembly from 1877 to 1878 and again from 1880 to 1881. In 1884, he was elected to the Georgia State Senate. From 1887 to 1890, he served as the president of the State Agricultural Society. In 1890, he was elected Governor of Georgia and served two terms in that capacity. - Local Identifier:
