John Walter Letson was a long-time educator and school administrator. He served as the superintendent of the public schools in Bessemer, Alabama from 1949 to 1957. He held the same position in Chattanooga, Tennessee from 1957 to 1960. He subsequently served as the superintendent of the Atlanta Public Schools from 1960 to 1973.
