Civil War;
The breastworks were a temporary foritification for troops during the Battle of Atlanta. The Battle of Atlanta was fought on July 22, 1864 during the American Civil War. General William Tecumseh Sherman and fellow Union General James B. McPherson led Federal troops against the forces of Confederate General John B. Hood southeast of Atlanta, Georgia. The Union suffered 3,641 casualties, while the Confederates sustained 8,500 casualties.
