The Atlanta National Bank was organized in September of 1865 and opened for business in December of that year. The bank’s proposed headquarters on the south side of Alabama Street, half a block east of Whitehall Street (now Peachtree Street), was burned by General Sherman’s army during the Civil War. As a result, the bank opened for business in the home of its first president Alfred Austell. However, the Alabama Street building was rebuilt and occupied by the bank a few months later. The bank moved to larger headquarters in 1903. - Metadata URL:
