The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra was officially founded in 1945, but organizations with that name have been performing since 1923. The organization as founded as the Atlanta Youth Symphony under the direction of Henry Sopkin who held the post of conductor until 1966. The organization changed its name to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 1947. In 1996, the Orchestra played at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Centennial 1996 Summer Olympics under the direction of Yoel Levi, Principal Conductor. - Metadata URL:
