Congregation Shearith Israel is a synagogue in the Morningside section of Atlanta, founded in 1904 by Eastern European immigrants on Hunter Street (now Martin Luther King Drive) in the Washington-Rawson neighborhood of South Atlanta. As Atlanta’s Jewish population moved to the north side of town, the congregation followed, building its current synagogue building in 1946, making it the first synagogue in DeKalb County. While it was originally founded as an Orthodox synagogue, the congregation became affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism in 2002. This congregation is best known for its influential rabbi, Tobias Geffen (1870-1970), who led it from 1910 until his death. - Local Identifier:
