- Portait of Mayor William Franklin Slaton, the superintendent of the Atlanta Public Schools from 1879 to 1907, in Atlanta, Georgia.
William Franklin Slaton (1831-1916) was a soldier and long-time educator and school administrator. He joined the Confederate Army as a lieutenant and during his service was promoted to major. After the Civil War, Slaton settled in Georgia. In 1874, he became principal of the Boys' High School in Atlanta and in 1879, he was elected superintendent of the city schools, serving in that capacity for twenty-eight years. - Local Identifier:
