The Georgia State Capitol site was previously occupied by Atlanta City Hall, which donated the land to the state to encourage them to move the capitol to Atlanta from Milledgeville. The building, which was designed to resemble the United States Capitol in Washington D.C., was completed in 1889 and designed by Chicago architects Willoughby Edbrooke and Franklin Burnham. The floors are made of marble from Pickens County, Georgia. In 1958 during a renovation, the dome was gilded with gold leaf from Dahlonega, Georgia, the site of America’s first gold rush. - Local Identifier:
