Dr. Leila Daughtry Denmark (1898-2012) was a pediatrician in Atlanta, Georgia, until her retirement at the age of 103. When she retired in May 2001, she was the world’s oldest practicing physician. She was a pioneering female doctor and medical researcher. She graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 1928 where she was the only female in the graduating class. She was awarded the Fisher Prize in 1935 for co-developing the pertussis vaccine. During her career, she worked at Grady Hospital and Henrietta Egleston Hospital at Emory University. She worked in private practice, taking referrals from the Public Health Department. She died at the age of 114. - Local Identifier:
