- View of the volunteer fire company Hook & Ladder Company, No. 1 in front of the first Kimball House on Whitehall Street (now Peachtree Street) in Atlanta, Georgia. The apparatus is a second-size Babcock Hook & Ladder truck.

Atlanta Hook & Ladder Company No. 1 went into service March 25, 1851. Three more volunteer companies formed by 1860 when they were combined under one fire department. The Civil War devastated the small volunteer fire department which lost all its fire apparatus. The fire department rebuilt and remained all-volunteer until 1882 when the six existing stations were dissolved and three paid fire stations were created to form the Atlanta Fire Department. - Local Identifier:
