Wesley Memorial Hospital was chartered in February 1904 by the North and South Georgia Conferences of the Methodist church. Asa G Candler purchased the Calico House, a twelve room house erected in 1860 at 129 Courtland Street near Auburn Avenue, to house the hospital which opened August 16, 1905 with 50 beds. The hospital moved to a new facility with 275 beds located on Emory University’s campus and donated by Asa G Candler in 1922. Emory University’s School of Medicine became associated formally with the hospital in 1925. In 1932 the name changed to Emory University Hospital and the school took over the operation of the hospital. It currently has 587 beds. The Calico house was destroyed in 1925 after sitting vacant for 3 years. - Local Identifier:
