Ocmulgee National Monument preserves over 17,000 years of evidence of human habitation by the Southeastern Native American culture, part of the South Appalachian Mississippian culture. Ceremonial mounds, burial mounds, and defensive trenches make up some of the earthworks. The site was designated for federal protection in 1934 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. In 1997, the site was designated a Traditional Cultural Property, the first so designated east of the Mississippi River. - Local Identifier:
