- Description:
- View of a newspaper clipping from the Atlanta Journal showing a drawing of the Confederate Soldiers Home in Atlanta, Georgia after a fire destroyed the building.
South; Dixie; nursing home;
In 1889, the Confederate Soldiers Home for infirm and indigent Civil War veterans was built on approximately 114 acres, purchased with private donations, southeast of the city of Atlanta, Georgia. The frame structure was designed by the architectural firm of Bruce & Morgan. Funds for the opening and operation of the home ran out, however, and it remained unused until 1900 when the Georgia General Assembly agreed to maintain it. In September of 1901, the home burned to the ground. A new brick building was built the following year to house the Confederate soldiers. After all the veterans passed away, the home was briefly used as the Confederate Widow’s Home. The building was closed in the 1960s and was eventually demolished. - Local Identifier:
