Marist College was founded in 1901 by the Society of Mary as a boy's military school on Ivy Street (now Peachtree Center Avenue) in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The school originally aimed to provide both secondary and college educational programs, but only ever awarded one college degree in its history. When the school relocated to its current site on Ashford-Dunwoody Road in suburban DeKalb County in 1962, it changed its name to Marist School to more appropriately reflect its mission. In 1976, Marist became a coeducational school, but continued to operate as a private, Roman Catholic college preparatory institution. - Local Identifier:
