Atlanta Mayors; Eastern Airlines;
Eddie Rickenbacker was a World War I fighter pilot, a race car driver, automotive designer, and CEO of Eastern Air Lines. William Berry Hartsfield was a native of Atlanta, Georgia, and a prominent 20th-century political leader. He was first elected to the Atlanta City Council in 1922. As an alderman, he helped establish Atlanta's first airport. He served six terms as mayor of Atlanta, first from 1937-41. He lost to challenger Roy McCraw in 1941, who served only a partial term after volunteering for overseas duty during World War II. Hartsfield re-gained his office in 1942 and served consecutive terms through 1961. - Local Identifier:
