Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) was a military officer and Republican politician from New York who later founded the Progressive Party. During the Spanish-American War in 1898, Roosevelt organized and led the 1st U.S. Volunteer Calvary Regiment—better known as the Rough Riders—which won the Battle of San Juan Hill. Upon his return home, he was elected governor of New York. He then served briefly as President William McKinley’s Vice President. When McKinley was assassinated, Roosevelt became the 26th President of the United States and served until 1909. In 1906, he became the first American to win the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in negotiating a peaceful conclusion to the Russo-Japanese War. - Local Identifier:
