- Uncle Sam employs a vast army to look after the big job of handling the nation's mail, an $8,715,587.67-a-year business. In Georgia there are 14 first-class post offices, 67 second-class, and 212 third-class, 700 fourth-class. A Georgia, Thomas E. Watson, was the author of a Congressional bill which has proved a vital factor in the growth of this business. A small appropriation for rural delivery was made in 1893. The first route in the United States was established at Quitman, Ga. Today, there are 1,113 rural carriers serving the state. 1. Atlanta's handsome post office, built of Georgia marble.

The Atlanta Central Post Office was built in 1933. In 1980 the Post office discontinued use of the building and it now houses government offices, it has been renamed as the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Building. The building is located at 77 Forsyth Street in Atlanta, Georgia. - Local Identifier:
