Atlanta businessman Joel Hurt was involved in real estate, insurance, and streetcars. He was responsible for the construction of three major buildings in downtown Atlanta, including the Hurt Building and the Equitable Building. He was born in 1850 in Hurtsboro, Alabama, and became a prominent Atlantan most known for the development of Inman Park neighborhood. He also constructed the world's first financially successful electric street railway, the Atlanta and Edgewood Street Railway Company and was involved in building the Hurt Building, named for himself and the South's first fireproof office building, the Equitable Building; and the organization of the Kirkwood Land Company to develop Druid Hills. Joel Hurt died in 1926. - Local Identifier:
