Houston Street School, also known at Gate City School, was one of three schools opened in the late 1800s for the education of African-American students. At the urging of school board member, John A. Beatie, Houston Street School was built in 1880 at the corner of Houston Street and Butler Street and the children attending Wheat Street School were relocated there.
