ALMA MATER

Where the Georgian Hills grow purple,

In the sunset glow,
Proudly stands our Alma Mater

In a vale below.

Chorus
Green and Gold float on for aye

Old Piedmont for thee
We thy loyal sons and daughters
Bless thy memory.

As around the mighty oak tree

Clings the ivy vine
So around thee dear old Piedmont

Loyal hearts entwine.

Here's to thee, then, dear old Piedmont!

May you ever stand
As an emblem of the noblest

In our fair Southland.

Familiar view from Piedmont campus.

Service Section

Piedmont differs from no other college when it
comes to contributions for its country. She has
given many of her sons and four members of the
faculty, who represent all branches of the service.
Piedmont is proud of the work which they are now
doing and will continue to do until this war is
over. For this reason, we proudly present this
service page in honoring them.

JUNIORS We have been at work for three
years now. When we started our formal
education as freshmen, we were frightened
and uncertain as to what might happen to
us. Time began to heal these worries when
we became sophomores. We are now juniors,
and we all realize that this is the year during
which we will decide our main field of in-
terest.

Since we are juniors, we shall also re-
member that we will take the place of the
seniors when they leave. This creates an
ambition to do a swell job and try to equal
if not surpass the senior classes which have
preceded us. With this aim before us, we
look forward to our senior year.

Piedmont has four societies on its campus two
for women and two for men. These societies, be-
ing formed shortly after the foundation of the
college, have had a great part in its growth and
development. They have sponsored dances, par-
tics, and many other worthwhile entertainments.
Candidates for these societies are obtained by an
invitation to membership which is given to the
new student. Upon his acceptance, the candidate
is initiated into one of the societies. The initia-
tions are events to which the old members look
forward. Most Piedmont students are affiliated
with one of these societies.

The Piedmont Owl was established during the
year 1912 as an organ of the student body at
Piedmont College. Its policy has always been,
and still continues to be, to support those things
which tend toward improvement and development
of Piedmont and its ideals.

Though the publication of The Owl was handi-
capped by the unrest which is the natural result
of an international war. The Owl has continued
publication this year. The accomplishments un-
der such conditions of unrest have not been as-
tonishing, but are the foundation for further
growth. This year has seen The Owl develop from
a student newspaper representing the views of the
staff into a tie between the College and its alumni
and friends.

Barring the prolongation of the war and its ac-
companying maladjustments. The Owl expects to
promote the expansion of Piedmont College along
practical and worthwhile educational lines.

Every year a group of students is selected from the entire student body by the fac-
ulty as being exceptional and desirable students. This year the faculty submitted
these names to the Piedmont Student Body for their approval. Seven students
were chosen from those names submitted.

The students chosen have bad their biographies published in the book titled,
"Who's Who In American Colleges And Universities".

Each student realizes and appreciates the importance of this honor.

In the past the Yonahian has served to offer to the students of Piedmont re-
membrances of their activities on the campus. This year we have put forth even-
effort to gather facts and things of interest to each of you. Due to the continuous
struggle put forth in the organization of this annual, you may notice some changes
in our physical make-up as shown on the next page.

PIEDMONT LIONS

Standing, left to right: John Stambaugh, Guard; Lewis Hallford, Guard; Roy Malcolm, Guard; James Ash,
Center: Gene Lacey, Forward; Gilbert Darnell, Guard; Frank Russell, Manager. . . . Front row: Jack Thornton,
Guard; Wickey Loudermilk, Forward; Bob Murphy, Forward; Bob Ash, Guard; Brown Pinkston, Center; William

Haynes, Guard.

Under the skillful direction of Coach "Ken" Stambaugh,
the Piedmont Lions got off to a spectacular start this
season. Opening the season with the Camp Toccoa Medi-
cos, the team played the entire regular schedule without
a single defeat. In the first game, sharp-shooter Gene
Lacey showed his stuff by netting a total of 31 points.

In the second game. Murphy led the team to a 47 to
41 victory over N. G. C.

So the games went for a while, and then the Georgia
All Stars, who played in the Cal. Eose Bowl, clashed
with Piedmont! What a sight to see Frankie Sinkwich,
Van Davis, the others of the nationally famous football
team on the court. Well, they played a good game, but
not quite well enough to defeat Piedmont. Not satisfied
with just one game, the teams played four other games.
Each time Piedmont came out on top.

Coach Stambaugh

After the regular season was over. Coach Stambaugh decided to let the team play a
few more games, even though the Lions were already represented in the Armed Forces.

Then came the invitation to play in the National Amateur Tournament at Denver, Col-
orado. The Lions made the trip, some 1,900 miles, in a station wagon. After making
this long trip, Piedmont was defeated by Howard Payne College of Texas by only six
points. On the way home, the Piedmont Lions did some fine work in winning three out
of 4 games, a record of which anyone should be proud.

will never forget this trip (espe-

Sophomore A freshman the year before that is, if he passed.

It is in this class that there is great rejoicing because we are
no longer freshmen. We have stood the punishment inflicted
upon us in the freshman program, and we know that we have
become wiser and bolder as the result of our experiences. We have
developed self-confidence. There is no limit to the amount of
knowledge that we have acquired during our sophomore year.
With all of these facts clearly in our mind, we are wasting our
time as being a sophomore any longer so let's make room and
soon be juniors.
