In appreciation of his life and work,

we dedicate to

HOMER W. STEVENS

this Yonahian of 1941.

2^>Homer William Stevens was born in Woodstock, Illinois, January 4,
1 874, and lived there until he was two years old. At that time his family
moved to Iowa, and from there, eight years later, to South Dakota, on
an immigrant train.

At the age of twenty-one, he entered Yankton College and Academy.
During his freshman year he enlisted in the United States Army and
was sent to the Philippines to fight in the Spanish-American War, leav-
ing San Francisco in July, 1898. In October, 1899, he went back to
Yankton, finished his junior year, and went on to the University of Min-
nesota, where he received a B.A. degree in 1902. The same year, he
married Miss Delia Coding, a graduate of Yankton, and a friend of his
since childhood.

After a year as superintendent of schools in Scotland, South Dakota,
Mr. Stevens returned to the Law School of the University of Minnesota
in 1904, receiving his LL.B. in 1905, his LL.M. in 1906, and his M.A.
in 1907. When he received his M.A. he was taken into the law faculty
at Minnesota and remained there until 1912, when he left the University
for public school work.

Except for two years spent in Oregon among timber interests, he
remained in public school work until 1921, when he came to Piedmont
as teacher of economics and director of the high school then a part of
Piedmont. His second year here was spent as head of the education
department and as economics teacher. He was made head of the
summer school in 1924, remaining in this position for four years.

Twelve years ago he was made head of the department of social
science and has seen this department increase from a class with a mem-
bership of twelve or fifteen to one of the largest classes in the college.

In a family of four sisters and three brothers, Mr. Stevens learned
quite early the values of sportsmanship. Always interested in athletics,
he helped organize a baseball league in the Army. His team, for which
he was catcher, played in Tokyo and Yokahoma, Japan.

At present Mr. and Mrs. Stevens live on a farm a mile from Dem-
orest, where Mrs. Stevens grows beautiful flowers and Mr. Stevens in-
dulges in his love for farming. They have two daughters, graduates of
Piedmont, who are now public school workers.

Always the soldier, Mr. Stevens now serves as chairman of the Hab-
ersham County Draft Board, while carrying on his duties at the college
and on his farm.

The 1941 YONAHIAN is worthy of your consideration: not because it
contains elaborate color photographs and artistic designs it doesn't; not
because it is the most expensive yearbook that Piedmont ever had it isn't;
not because it is the best YONAHIAN ever published it isn't: but because
it is THE YONAHIAN, which year after year strives to present in tangible
review a record of the Piedmont of
