President Ray Cleere
Remembering Piedmont
Books such as this one are usually put aside after a brief review
pnd, with a few exceptions, ignored for many years as circum
stances push us through life, But after twenty, thirty, or even forty
years, this pictorial summary of a year at Piedmont again catches your
attention. After a few laughs related to funny clothes and hair styles, you
may begin to wonder what became of all those friends and that interesting
cast of characters who served as faculty. Predictably, your view of the
College today will have changed dramatically as you look back over the
years. For example, today you may dwell on good GPA or no scholarship,
not enough to do here (especially on weekends), should I transfer, will this
major produce a job, how many times can you fall in love, cafeteria food,
parking, dorm visitation, unreasonable teachers and the old man in the
president's office. But after a few decades, other impressions may begin
to form about these years at a small college in the hills of North Georgia.
Possibly, it was the year when learning became a new and more personal
experience, a year when you were not afraid to share your innermost
feelings on everything from love to spiritual commitment. The time when
you realized that even as an individual you could make an enormous
difference in the lives of others. The discovery that, for you, a small college
in a small town had exactly what was needed to set your future in motion.
And it was also a most important time because it produced the relation-
ships between you and the people around you as you all remember
Piedmont.

Foreign Travels : Egypt
Every summer Dr. Al
Pleysier takes a small
group of students to Egypt for
two weeks. Although the trip
is sponsored by the History
Department, it is open to all
students.
During the course of the
trip students visit many
interesting sites. Places like
the Giza Plateau, the Mu-
seum of Antiquities, various
temples, the Valley of the
Kings, and the Nile River are
on the itinerary.
This year ten students
enjoyed the expedition:
Amy Banwell, Ashton Boom,
Rachel Davidson, Joey
Giametta, Daniel Green,
Jennifer Hanson, Dana
Parson, Philip Roberts, and
Chip Ward.
May 18-25, 2000
There is nothing like the desert in the morning. Here the travelers visit the
Giza Plateau at sunrise. The students had the opportunity to climb the
smaller pryamid on the left, the Pyramid of Menkaure.

Modern Cairo is a thriving metropolis. Intertwined with hotels
and corporate buildings are bustling markets and beautiful
mosques that make Cairo the "City of a Thousand Spires." Egypt
is also wrought with poverty and squalor. Many people live in
substandard environments and lack even simple necessities like
clean water or food.

This year the Humanities
Department sponsored a
trip to Ireland. The trip was
preceded by a class on Irish
Literature and Religion.
Faculty members Carlton
Adams, Windy Charles,
Bob Cummings, Timothy
Lytle, Lisa Lumpkin, and
Michelle Wetherbee all
attended, along with 19
students.
This trip allowed the travelers
to see many interesting
attractions, including the Dublin
Writers Museum, several
monasteries and abbeys, and
the Aran Islands.

Foreign Studies: London & Dublin
Each year the School of
Business arranges an Interna-
tional Business Seminar trip
known as "The European
Experience".
Students are exposed to
business procedures and
economic principals in a
intercultural environment
and study the culture and
history of the United King-
dom and Ireland.
This year 18 students enjoyed
this educational experience.
Accompanied by Dr. William
Piper and Michelle
Wetherbee, the students
visited Cambridge University,
London Business School, and
Hewlett-Packard, Ireland.
May 8-17, 2000
The travelers did get to see
some of the beautiful English
countryside during their
business trip. Here they are
at the entrance to Cambridge
University.
Despite a busy itinerary they
saw many interesting tourist
sites, including Big Ben.

Dr. James F. Mellichamp, Dean
The School of Arts and Sciences provides academic
programs in the fine arts, humanities, social sciences,
natural sciences, communication arts, and mathematics.
All of these areas support Piedmont College's historic
mission as a liberal arts institution through the under-
graduate general education curriculum. Beyond this,
major programs of study are available to students at
both the undergraduate and graduate levels. All
students are challenged to develop competence in
written and spoken communication, mathematics and
technology; to develop an understanding and apprecia-
tion of the diversity of peoples and cultures; and to
develop an ability to identify and use information to
think critically and creatively.

This year, the Student Government Association worked vigorously to be the voice of the student body. The SGA
believes that all segments of the Piedmont College community must work together to help the College become all that it has the
potential to be; without students, that goal would be unobtainable.
The year began with difficult issues at hand a revised visitation policy and the drastic change to a tobacco free campus.
Through open forums, a student-initiated letter writing campaign, and extensive communication with the administration, the
revised visitation hours were reworked once again, to the satisfaction of many resident students.
The SGA also organized exciting events for the entire Piedmont College community. The Corner Cafe was transformed
into The Lion's Den, an after hours student coffeehouse. The first annual Spookfest was held October 27-31, featuring activities
such as scary movies on the quad, a costume dance at The Lion's Den, and a campus-wide trick-or-treat. In addition, the faculty
stomped students in a student-faculty softball game.
The issue of fund-raising was tackled creatively by the SGA. Activities included a Dating Auction (even President Cleere
participated in that one!) and working athletic event concession stands. This year's Homecoming Dance, sponsored by SGA,
was held at the Hilton Lake Lanier Islands Resort.
The SGA hopes that future members of the student government can build upon this year's hard work and success.

The Lion Is Roar has become an excit-

and expression for the Piedmont College
community. This weekly eight-page
paper includes campus news, sports,
politics, entertainment, student poetry,
special features, and guest columnists.
As a result of several controversial
topics covered in the student newspaper,
the Roars staff helped open forums for
the student body. One such forum
included bringing local and state offi-

attorneys, to discuss student rights and
the law.
Increased interest in The Lion 's Roar is
attributed to the implementation of the
Communication Arts program at the
college.

Rotaract is an international program for
young men and women ages 18 to 30 who
believe they can make a difference. Rotaract
clubs provide an opportunity for young
adults to enhance the knowledge and skills
that will assist them in personal development.
to address the physical and social needs of
their communities and to promote better
relations between all people worldwide
through a framework of friendship and
service. We, Piedmont College, emphasize
the importance of individual responsibility as
the basis of personal success and community
involvement. Habersham County Rotary
supports the areas of concerns we provide.
Our projects may include; The Cystic
Fibrosis Walk-a-Thon, Fruit Sales for Circle
of Hope, Turkey Feather Sales, Biatholan,
Luv-O-Grams, Car Washes, and other areas
of service to help Piedmont's campus. Our
motto is "Fellowship Through Service" and
