President Ray Cleere Remembering Piedmont Books such as this one are usually put aside after a brief review pnd, with a few exceptions, ignored for many years as circum stances push us through life, But after twenty, thirty, or even forty years, this pictorial summary of a year at Piedmont again catches your attention. After a few laughs related to funny clothes and hair styles, you may begin to wonder what became of all those friends and that interesting cast of characters who served as faculty. Predictably, your view of the College today will have changed dramatically as you look back over the years. For example, today you may dwell on good GPA or no scholarship, not enough to do here (especially on weekends), should I transfer, will this major produce a job, how many times can you fall in love, cafeteria food, parking, dorm visitation, unreasonable teachers and the old man in the president's office. But after a few decades, other impressions may begin to form about these years at a small college in the hills of North Georgia. Possibly, it was the year when learning became a new and more personal experience, a year when you were not afraid to share your innermost feelings on everything from love to spiritual commitment. The time when you realized that even as an individual you could make an enormous difference in the lives of others. The discovery that, for you, a small college in a small town had exactly what was needed to set your future in motion. And it was also a most important time because it produced the relation- ships between you and the people around you as you all remember Piedmont. Although the trip is sponsored by the History Department, it is open to all students. During the course of the trip students visit many interesting sites. Places like the Giza Plateau, the Mu- seum of Antiquities, various temples, the Valley of the Kings, and the Nile River are on the itinerary. This year ten students enjoyed the expedition: Amy Banwell, Ashton Boom, Rachel Davidson, Joey Giametta, Daniel Green, Jennifer Hanson, Dana Parson, Philip Roberts, and Chip Ward. The SGA believes that all segments of the Piedmont College community must work together to help the College become all that it has the potential to be; without students, that goal would be unobtainable. The year began with difficult issues at hand a revised visitation policy and the drastic change to a tobacco free campus. Through open forums, a student-initiated letter writing campaign, and extensive communication with the administration, the revised visitation hours were reworked once again, to the satisfaction of many resident students. The SGA also organized exciting events for the entire Piedmont College community. The Corner Cafe was transformed into The Lion's Den, an after hours student coffeehouse. The first annual Spookfest was held October 27-31, featuring activities such as scary movies on the quad, a costume dance at The Lion's Den, and a campus-wide trick-or-treat. In addition, the faculty stomped students in a student-faculty softball game. The issue of fund-raising was tackled creatively by the SGA. Activities included a Dating Auction (even President Cleere participated in that one!) and working athletic event concession stands. This year's Homecoming Dance, sponsored by SGA, was held at the Hilton Lake Lanier Islands Resort. The SGA hopes that future members of the student government can build upon this year's hard work and success.
