- Photograph of unknown Naval officer, taken by a U.S. Navy photographer circa 1944. The WAVES program was overseen by a commissioned female officer. Mildred H. McAfee was the first, bearing the title of Naval Reserve Lieutenant Commander, but male officers oversaw much of the day to day operation of the program.
