The activity of faith. James 2:20 (Preached April 30, 1876)

James 2:20 Faith without works is dead. From this text I desire to illustrate the active nature of xn. faith. I wish to show you that it is the most lively and energetic principle which can animate the the human heart. I infer this, in 1st place from use of the word faith in SS. This word [faith] does not always occur in SS. in the same sense. Sometimes it signifies the gospel: [as being] as where Felix sent to hear from him concerning the faith in Christ. More commonly, however, it indicates, the one [simple belief of] the credit given to [evidence] Scriptural testimony. / But, inasmuch as there are at least 3 [4] ways in which the mind may receive this divine testimony, a separate [exercise] [gratily] degree of faith is assigned to each. / The may [admit the uneasily] [into our thoughts] [of] yield to Gods witnessing word by an [mere] intellectual conviction of its truth: as when Paul said to Agrippa: Believest then the prophets? I know that thou believest. The activity of faith. Wilminghim, April 30, 76 morning
