[Title unavailable; concerns (William?) Paley] Dr Paley says: that the transaction record in the Ch. of Exodus and 22 verse was the first actual [?tion] of the sabbath. Jews first originated this idea 1. The transactions of the seventh-day follow immediately those of the 6 -- as the 6 follow the 5. It is the regular order 1 Day Light -- 2 firm! 3 day land app! 4 sun & moon 5 fishes & wings & fowl 6 terrestrial animals & man and Seventh -- euded his wk. rested from all his work & *blessed & sanctified 7th day because on it he had rested from all his work which God created & made 2. To adopt Paleys theory we subvert the found of faith. If we can suppose that events recorded in the bible did not occur exactly as recorded -- there is no confidence to 3. The distribution of the wk of creation into its several parts would be deprived of its object & end. The object was to mark the proportion [?] labor & the parts to worship -- but take way the sab. [?] lesson taught. 4. There is [?] [??ple] in S.S. of any institution which was [de??] [??tive] which did nothing may will be said that not one person in a [??llion] wd suppose that this record was on an [?pated] History -- This notion seems according to Dr owens exercitations to have been first broached by the Jewis Drs in their zeal to magnify the mosaical ritual. Dr Paley strives to prove (vainly) that it was not instituted in Paradies & he does it because he holds the Institution is only a positive & not a moral one -- if he would admit that it was established in Paradise he must admit that it was of moral force & perpetual obligation -- this he denies & hence to be consistent he must maintain the untenable Theory that it was never instituted until the Ch. of Israel were in the wilderness -- and that the Historian in recording the work of creation mentions [?] way of anticipation. It is in short utter [?] [?ith] reason common sense or any [corr?] [?tation] of Scripture
