- Typescript letter from Russel Cecil to Samuel Spahr Laws expressing his opposition to the mandatory retirement age statute for Columbia Theological Seminary faculty but is compelled to enforce the rule as a member of the Board of Directors, hopes that the [Presbyterian Church in U.S.] General Assembly or Synod [of South Carolina] will rescind the statute, expresses praise for Laws and regret for his departure, Louisville (Ky.), August 23, 1898. Also contains manuscript note by Laws on back of letter describing Cecil and his opposition to the mandatory retirement age statute, undated.
