- Description:
- Newspaper clipping of October 11, 1888 from the Southern Presbyterian. Reports on the Presbytery of Charleston's decision to adopt a paper by the Baltimore Assembly [28th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.], which states that evolution is "contrary to the word of God as interpreted in the Standards of the Church, and forbids the public contending". It recounts members of the Presbytery's protest of the prohibition against public contending, and the General Assembly's counter to their protest. The author of the article sides with the members who protest the prohibition of public contending on the subject of evolution. The author transcribes a portion of an examination given to new members of the Presbytery of Charleston, including Rev. Prof. William Flinn, on the subject of evolution. Articles from the Greenville Daily News, October 24, 25, 26, 28, and 29, 1884 cover testimony and debates at the Synod of South Carolina meeting regarding the evolution controversy and Dr. Woodrow.
