- Manuscript sermon by Robert Zenas Johnston concerning the place of prayer, faith, and the law of God in Christian action and how the knowledge of God and the gospel shape Christian character. This sermon was composed at Simons Hall, Columbia Theological Seminary, February 11, 1861, when Johnston was a student, and immediately after the formation of the government for the Confederate States in America. This sermon was delivered at Smyrna or Aveleigh Presbyterian Church (Newberry, S.C.), February 17, 1861, and delivered multiple times subsequently throughout the Spring and Summer of 1861: Sharon Presbyterian Church (Charlotte, N.C.), March 17; First Presbyterian Church (Union, S.C.), March 24; First Presbyterian Church (Concord, N.C.), April 14; Third Creek Presbyterian Church (Cleveland, N.C.), May 19; First Presbyterian Church (Statesville, N.C.), June 6; Back Creek Presbyterian Church (Mount Ulla, N.C.), June 9; Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church (Pineville, N.C.), August 18; Providence Presbyterian Church (Charlotte, N.C.), August 25. Also contains an outline of the sermon, as well as notes entitled "Christian Fortitude" concerning Colossians 1:11, composed at Columbia Theological Seminary, February 15, 1861.
