- Manuscript sermon by Robert Zenas Johnston lamenting over the current state of the Civil War and the Confederate military. Johnston informs his audience that there is a divine purpose in all these events and discusses the relation between the Christian religion and the civil government and competing philosophical influences upon the founding of the United States. This service was occasioned by a proclamation from Jefferson Davis [May 3, 1862]. The sermon was delivered at Sharon Presbyterian Church (Charlotte, N.C.), May 16, 1862. Sermon on Isaiah 8:13.
