- Description:
- Manuscript sermon by Robert Zenas Johnston concerning piety as a characteristic of women and describes their mission as to do good for others. Johnston delineates between actions that denote piety in women and those which do not and concludes that women suitably fulfill their mission at home while admonishing younger women to love their mothers. Johnston quotes extensively from numerous works and authors throughout, including Thomas Campbell, “The Pleasures of Hope” (1800); Johann Heinrich Kurtz, “Manual of Sacred History” (1855); William Henry Milburn, “The Pioneer Preacher” (1858); and George C. Baldwin “A Mother’s Influence” (1862). This sermon was originally delivered at Providence Presbyterian Church (Charlotte, N.C.), July 17, 1864, and again at Sharon Presbyterian Church (Charlotte, N.C.) within the same month. Sermon on Proverbs 31:30. Transcription and significant historical detail provided by Suzanne Boliek Veazey, Providence Presbyterian Church (Charlotte, N.C.), July 9, 2020.
