Transcription and historical detail provided by Suzanne Boliek Veazey, Providence Presbyterian Church (Charlotte, N.C.), June 21, 2020. The likely date of the sermon is November 15, 1861, on the occasion of the meeting of the Presbytery of Concord at Providence Presbyterian Church (Charlotte, N.C.). Quotation below provided by Suzie Boliek Veazey, June 22, 2020: “On the 17th day of November 1861, Mr. R. Z. Johnston was ordained and installed the 7th pastor of Providence church. He had been invited to visit the church before he left Columbia Seminary in that year – he commenced in July 1861 his ministry at Providence and Sharon. He was raised in 3d. Creek congregation, Rowan county, N.C. and graduated at Davidson College 1858. The Presbytery of Concord met at Providence Nov. 15, 1861 – day of fasting and prayer appointed by the Confederate Government, and held appropriate services with the congregation ----.” From the North Carolina Presbyterian, March 25, 1874
