- Sermons by John Newton. John Newton, a native of Pennsylvania, came to Georgia as a missionary in the 1780s and was ordained by the Presbytery of South Carolina in 1788. He led the organization of Beth-Salem Presbyterian Church near Lexington, Georgia in 1785 and served the congregation after his ordination until his death in 1797.
