- Sermon notes by John Newton from March 29, 1789 through September 5, 1790, for services conducted at Beth-Salem church near Lexington, Georgia. Three documents dated late September, 1789 are titled 'Preparation Sabbath,' and 'For the Fast Day,' and 'Action.' John Newton, a native of Pennsylvania, came to Georgia as a missionary in the 1780s and was ordained by the Presbytery of South Carolina in 1788. He led the organization of Beth-Salem Presbyterian Church near Lexington, Georgia in 1785 and served the congregation after his ordination until his death in 1797.
