"Columbia Friendship Circle Gifts
Giving Societies Begin in 1993
Next year's Annual Fund Report of
this Donor Acknowledgement
Section in Vantage will list the
names of contributors in distinct
giving societies that reflect the
history and mission of Columbia
Seminary. Watch for more informa-
tion in the spring issue.
ACKNOVVXELXiEMENTS
ALUMNI/AE GIVING BY
CLASS
Support from graduates is critical
for Columbia's continued mission and
fiscal health. Each alumni/ae gift to
the seminary is worth far more than
its actual dollar value. Foundations
and other donors view a gift from an
alum as a vote of confidence in his or
her alma mater. Pastors and profes-
sional church workers often work
long hours for relatively little pay.
This economic reality makes gifts
from alumni/ae all the more precious
to the seminary.
By means of Alumni/ae Honor
Roll, Columbia gratefully acknowl-
edges those graduates who have
made contributions in fiscal year

THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
"ROOTED IN TRADITION - GROWING WITH VISION
On July 1, 1988, Columbia Seminary began its Capital Campaign for
$31,450,000 It will stand as one of the most ambitious capital campaigns in the
history of theological education.
We wish to gratefully acknowledge those individuals, foundations, busi-
nesses, congregations, and the Presbyterian Church (USA) for supporting this
drive for much needed capital. Thanks to them, programs are being funded
buildings are being renovated, an expanded library is moving toward ground-
breaking day, scholarship endowment is increasing; all so that we, our children,
and generations to come mav continue to hear the Word rightly preached and
receive the Sacraments rightly administered, to the glory of God and Jesus
( hrist our Lord.
Sincerely,

FIRST PRESBYTERY CAM-
PAIGN GOES OVER GOAL
On October 27, 1992, Northeast
Georgia Presbytery officially closed
its capital campaign for Columbia
Seminary, with over $307,000 in gifts
and pledges from 50 of its 60
churches. The goal was $275,000.
It is fitting that Northeast Geor-
gia be the first presbytery in
Columbia's synod campaign to
complete a capital fund drive; the
seminary was founded in 1828 at the
Lexington Presbyterian Church in
the heart of the presbytery.
To the news about the
campaign's impressive success,
President Oldenburg responded,
"We are extremely grateful to all the
congregations and individuals in the
Presbytery of Northeast Georgia who
worked hard to put us over the top.
Their efforts are a strong affirmation of
our church's historic commitment to
theological education at the presbytery
and congregational level."
The following churches have indi-
cated participation in the drive, primar-
ily to raise funds for a major addition to
the seminary library:

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
AND LOAN FUNDS
Since its earliest days Columbia
has received gifts for endowed schol-
arship and student loan funds from
contributors who wish to provide on-
going financial assistance to students
and student families in need. Earn-
ings on the investment of these funds,
awarded as scholarship aid or student
loans, help students meet some of the
cost of theological education. Without
this assistance, many who are called
to ministry would not be able to
attend seminary.

Three churches in particular deserve
honorable mention for doubling their
pledges: The First Presbyterian Church,
Gainsville, Georgia pledged $100,000 on
an original appeal for $50,000. The Belle
Terrace Presbyterian Church,Augusta,
Georgia pledged $2,400 on a request for
$1,200 half of the gift will go to Co-
lumbia and half to Johnson C. Smith
Theological Seminary. The New Hope
Church of Comer, Georgia doubled
their request of $900 to $1800. Our
special thanks extends to these congre-
gations for going the second mile in
their assistance of theological education.

MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT
FUNDS
As the cost of theological
education rises, gifts to the permanent
endowment help meet the financial
obligations of operating the seminary.
Currently, earnings from endowment
provide funds for approximately 50
percent of Columbia's operating
budget.
For years Columbia has been
blessed with memorial and tribute
gifts to the endowment. These
contributions help assure the
seminary's future operation and
provide fiscal stability in times of
economic change.

Throughout its 165-year history Columbia Theological Seminary has main-
tained special covenants with its parent synods, now the Synod of South

presbyteries within the bounds of these two synods have provided critical fi-
nancial support to Columbia, along with revenues provided through the
denomination's 1% Plan. Contributing synods, presbyteries, churches, Bible
classes, women's groups, youth groups and others have the seminary's sincer-
est gratitude for their faithful interest and support.
