Gifts in Academic Year 1992 - 93
The Gift Societies of Columbia Theological Seminary provide a means for
recognizing and expressing appreciation to those graduates and friends who
give financial support to the seminary. The societies are named after persons
who have made historic contributions in Columbia's life and witness.
Unless contributors request anonymity they are automatically registered
each year as members of one of the seminary's gift societies. They are:
The Presidents' Society ($15,000+)
The Peter Marshall Society ($5,000-14,999)
The William Marcellus McPheeters Society ($1,000-4,999)
The Woodrow Wilson Society ($500-999)
The Agnes Law Society ($250-499)
The Charles A. Stillman Society ($100-249)
The Thomas and Anne Holbrook Goulding Society ($10-99)
Two additional societies have been established for special types of gifts:
The J. McDowell Richards Society recognizes those who have made planned
gifts or have documented bequests with the seminary's development office.
The Columbia Founders have a permanent membership, recognized as those
individuals and congregations who have given extraordinary financial support
to the seminary in many cases over the course of a lifetime.
The Presidents' Society
"For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus
Christ."
1 Corinthians 3:11
Each of us builds upon foundations laid by others. We are forever re-
minded of this truth at Columbia Seminary- As we strive to follow in the
tradition of the Master Builder and those apostles, prophets, pastors, and
teachers who have gone before us, we are both humbled and inspired.
Six outstanding presidents have gone before me: Thornton C. Whaling, John
M. Wells, Richard T. Gillespie, J. McDowell Richards, C. Benton Kline, and J.
Davison Philips. Visitors to our campus need not look far to behold the won-
derful legacies of their leadership. Our debts to them can never be repaid;
rather, they challenge us to continue building, as Paul said, "with gold, silver,
and precious stones," rather than "wood, hay, and straw," in all that we do
here.
On behalf of all who have benefited from your great generosity, I express
my personal gratitude to you who, in joining the Presidents' Society, have
become partners in our mission.
Gratefully,
From the Board of Directors
Your gifts and contributions have supported a hard working student body,
faculty, and staff at the seminary. They have also made possible multiple edu-
cational and spiritual growth programs that provide the best possible pastoral
leadership and enrichment for the ministries of many local congregations.
On behalf of the entire seminary community, we offer thanks to God and to
you for your partnership with us in building the future of theological education
here at Columbia.
Grace and peace always.
Sincerely,
John A. Conant

The Peter Marshall
Society
"How beautiful on the mountains are the
feet of ///esc who preat h good news!"
Romans 10:15
At the urging of fellow church
members, Scots-born Peter Marshall
left his work among the steel mills of
Birmingham, Alabama, to attend
Columbia. He went on to become one
of the great preachers of the twentieth
century and in his short but distin-
guished career served as chaplain i >i
the U.S. Senate and pastor of the New
York Avenue Presbyterian Church in
Washington, D.C. His faith and lift
were later immortalized in the bio-
graphical writings of his wife Cather-
ine. By their gifts members of the
Marshall Society help to prepare the
Christian preachers and teachers of
tomorrow.

"Behold, 1 have taught you statutes and
ordinances, a> the Lord my God com-
manded me, thai you should do them m
the land which you are entering to take
possession of it
Deuteronomy 4:5
William Marcellus McPheeters,
distinguished Professor of Biblical Lit-
erature and Old Testament Studies
(1888-1933), was famous for his
rigorous expectations of seminarians
during his 45 years at Columbia.
Close to the end of his career, he
expressed his hopes for the seminary
in these words: "Let us, by God's
help, make Columbia Seminary an in-
stitution to which our choicest will
throng, where they can be fully
equipped intellectually to grapple
with the grave problems with which
the church of God is even now
confronted, and where their own
hearts may be thoroughly leavened
with the gospel of Christ." Members
of the McPheeters Society perpetuate
a single-minded dedication to excel-
lence in theological education at
Columbia.

The Woodrow Wilson
Society
"The nursing child shall play over the hole
ol the asp, and the weaned child shall put
its hand on the adder's den. They shall
not hurt or destroy in all my holy moun-
tain; for the earth shall be full of the
knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover
the sea."
Isaiah 11:8,9
Thomas Woodrow Wilson's faith
and biblical vision of peace were
forged in the community he enjoyed
with his family, in-laws, and friends at
Columbia Seminary. His father and
uncle were both on the seminary's
faculty, and his wife, Ellen Louise
Axson, was the granddaughter of a
Columbia graduate. As a young man
he made his profession of faith in the
Columbia chapel. Years later as
President of the United States he said,
"1 have heard much eloquent speak-
ing, but on the whole the best speak-
ing 1 ever heard in my life was in this
little chapel." By their gifts, members
of the Wilson Society help assure that
the message of the Christian gospel
will continue to serve as a godly
influence in public life.

"The kingdom of God is like a grain of
mustard seed, which, when sown upon the
ground, is the smallest of all seeds upon
the earth; yet when it is sown it grozos up
and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and
puts forth large branches, so that the birds
of the air can make nests in its shade. "
Mark 4:31,32
In 1828 Thomas and Anne
Holbrook Goulding hosted five young
ministry students in their Lexington,
Georgia, manse. There, around the
kitchen table, he taught them to
translate the Greek New Testament.
The table now stands in the seminary
president's outer office, a perpetual
reminder of those small beginnings
from which Columbia has grown to a
place of leadership in theological
education. By their contributions,
members of the Goulding Society rec-
ognize the immeasurable value of
small beginnings and demonstrate
their support for Columbia and its 165
years of commitment to preparing
leaders for the Church of Jesus Christ.

The J. McDowell Richards Society
"For he looked forward to the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is
God." Hebrews 11:10
Rhodes scholar, dedicated churchman, moderator of the General Assembly,
and seminary president from 1932 to 1971, Dr. Richards' commitment to Colum-
bia lives on in the many generations of Presbyterians who have dearly loved and
respected him. Under his sterling leadership, Columbia Seminary survived the
Great Depression of the 1930s, the theological controversies of the 1940s, and led
the church in Christian witness and action during the racial crises of the 1950s
and '60s. According to former Columbia President J. Davison Philips, "He is one
of those rare persons whose life is measured in a hundered significant ways as
one of faithful and effective service to the church of Christ." Society members
testify to the Christian character and forward-looking vision of J. McDowell
Richards qualities which are central to the Columbia tradition.
The J. McDowell Richards Society has been inaugurated to recognize those
who have made provisions for a gift to Columbia in the course of their estate
planning. Planned Gifts such as charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift an-
nuities, life estate gifts of residences or other real estate holdings, or an intended
bequest to the seminary, all qualify a contributor for membership in this society.
Those interested in learning more about the tax and income advantages of
planned giving are invited to contact Columbia's Office of Development and
Seminary Relations, 404/378-8821.

Supporting church groups, congregations, and
governing bodies
Throughout its 165-year history Columbia Theological Seminary has main-
tained special covenants with its parent synods, now the Synod of South
Atlantic (Georgia, South Carolina, and Honda) and the Synod of Living Waters
(Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky). Congregations and P resb\
tenes within the bounds of these two synods have provided critical financial
support to Columbia, along with revenues provided through the Presbyterian
Church (USA) Fund for Theological Education. Contributing synods presb}
tenes, churches, Bible classes, women's groups, youth groups, and others have
the seminary's sincerest gratitude for their faithful interest and support

Raised to the Church Triumphant
Endowment Funds
As the cost of theological education rises, gifts to the permanent endowment
help meet the financial obligations of operating the seminar) Currently
earnings from endowment provide funds ten approximateh iO percent of
Columbia's operating budget.
Scholarship and Loan
Funds
Since its earliest days Columbia
has received gifts for endowed
scholarship and student loan funds
from contributors who wish to
provide ongoing financial assistance
to students and student families in
need. Earnings on the investment of
these funds, awarded as scholarship
aid or student loans, help students
meet some of the cost of theological
education. Without this assistance,
many who are called to ministry
would not be able to attend seminary.

Columbia Founders
"Unless the Lord build* the house, those who build labor in vain
Psalm 127:1
The Columbia Founders have demonstrated extraordinary levels of support
for the seminary, some over the course of a lifetime. Words cannot adequately
express the depth of appreciation felt by all friends of Columbia for the sacrifi-
cial ways in which the Founders have contributed to the seminary's programs,
buildings, and grounds. Their generosity calls all of us to practice better
stewardship of what we have been given. Thanks be to God!
