73rd Sessions. Augusta 3rd April 1828.
The Presbytery of Hopewell met according to adjournment
and was opened with a sermon by Brother Church, the former
moderator from Nehemiah, 2nd: 3. Constituted with prayer.
Members present,

until half past 3 Oclock P.M. At the appointed hour presbytery
convened. Members present as above. Brother Chamberlain was
chosen Moderator, and Brother Alexander Clerk.

Samuel K. Talmage, presented a regular dismission from
the Presbytery of Newton New Jersey, affectionately recommending
him to this body, whereupon he was
received as a member and took his seat accordingly.
The minutes of the last session of Presbytery not
being present, It was resolved that Presbytery proceed
to hear the trials of Mr. Richards. Mr. Richards
accordingly exhibited written trials on the subjects
previously assigned him by Presbytery, consisting of
a Latin Exegesis, a Lecture, a critical exercise,
and a sermon, which were all sustained as parts
of trial period, to licensure. Presbytery then adjourned
to meet at this place tomorrow morning
9 oclock. Concluded with prayer.


Augusta 4th April 1828.
Presbytery met according to adjournment
and was constituted with prayer.
Members present as on yesterday.

Brother Kirkpatrick appeared in presbytery, and
having given sufficient reasons for tardiness, took his
seat. Brother Patterson, a licentiate, appeared and
assigned reasons for tardiness which were sustained.
A letter was received from Hopewell church in
Crawford co., also a verbal supplication from Smyrna
DeKalb* [**A mistake - say Newton County*] co. praying for supplies. On motion, Resolved,
that these supplications lie on the table for
the present.
A communication was received from Mr. Cassels a
candidate under our care, giving reasons for absence
which were sustained. Mr. Cassels Lecture on Psalm
15th, was exhibited to Presbytery, and sustained as
a part of trials.
Thomas F. Scott a member of the presbyterian church
in Athens appeared before Presbytery desiring to be
taken under its care as a candidate for the gospel
ministry, and was examined on experimental religion,
and with respect to his views of wishing to take
upon him the sacred office; his examination was sustained

and he was received as a candidate under
our care: And the following subjects of trial were
assigned Mr. Scott to be exhibited at our next state
sessions, viz, A Latin exegesis on Num voluntas humana
libera sit? And a critical exercise on
Luke 15th: 7th.
A desire was expressed to presbytery that James C.
Patterson, Carlisle P. Beman, and John Harrison
licentiates under our care should receive ordination
as evangelists. On motion, resolved that
parts of trial be assigned the above named brethren
prior to ordination: and it is ordered, that
brother Patterson prepare a discourse on Gal. 6:14.
brother Beman a discourse on Johns gospel 1:1 and
brother Harrison one on Johns gospel 3rd: 19. and
that they be ordained as evangelists at the
next stated sessions of Presbytery, if their trials
be sustained: and that brother Moderwel preach
the ordination sermon, and brothers Talmage
be his alternate; that brother Waddel preside and

and give the charge, and that brother Church be his
alternate. A recess was then ordered until 3 Oclock P.M.
At the hour appointed presbytery again convened.
A letter was received from Father Cummins assigning
satisfactory reasons for absence. Also a letter from brother
Gamble enclosing six dollars for contingent purposes.
Joseph Bryan an elder from Mount Zion church
appeared in Presbytery and took a seat.
On motion, resolved, that a committee of two be appointed
to draft a report on the state of religion within our
bounds to be sent to the General Assembly. Brethren
Church and Talmage were appointed that committee.
On motion, resolved, that the congregational reports
be submitted to presbytery.
On motion, resolved, that a committee of three be
appointed to devise the best method of supplying
the destitute churches within our bounds, to report
before the rising of this body. Brethren Wadddel,
Kirkpatrick, and Bryant were appointed that
committee.

A short recess was then ordered to give place to the
deliberations of the Georgia Missionary Society.
After the recess, the presbytery again convened, and
on motion adjourned to meet at this place tomorrow
morning at past 8 Oclock.
Concluded with prayer.


Augusta April 5th 1828.
Presbytery met according to adjournment, and was
constituted with prayer. The minutes of the last were
read.
On motion, resolved that the session books of the
churches be called for. None but the session book
of the church in this city was present. Brethren
Church and Bryant were appointed a committee
to examine it report before the rising of
Presbytery.
Mr. Richards was examined on the subjects prescribed
by the book of discipline prior to licensure,
and his examination was sustained.

On motion, resolved that Mr. Richards be licensed on
tomorrow; immediately after divine service in the
afternoon. A recess was then ordered until 3 Oclock P.M.
At the appointed hour Presbytery again convened.
Brother Goulding appeared and having assigned
satisfactory reasons for tardiness took his seat.
Mr. Thomas McGruder a member of the church in Washington,
Wilkes co. appeared before Presbytery expressing a
desire to be taken under its care as a candidate for the
Gospel ministry. He was examined on experimental
religion, and with respect to his views of the sacred
office. His examination was sustained and he was accordingly
received under our care. Presbytery assigned
Mr. McGruder John 20: 29. the subject of a critical exercise:
Num supplicum seetiralorum ternum futurum
sit? the subject of an Exegesis and the 1st Psalm the subject
of a lecture.
The committee appointed to draft a report on the state
of religion within our bounds to send up to the next
General Assembly, reported, and their report was accepted.

The committee to whom was referred the subject of devising
the best method of supplying the destitute churches within
our bounds reported as follows, Resolved, that brother Gamble
preach in Butts co. three times and that one of the times be
a communion; the Brother Kirkpatrick preach three
times at Smyrna and one of the times administer the
Lords Supper: that Brother Stratton preach three times at
Hopewell, Crawford co. and likewise administer the sacrament
of the Supper once; and that the Clerk be
directed to transmit a copy of the above resolutions
to each of the above named brethren.
On motion, resolved, that a committee of two be appointed
to draft a system of bye laws for the future government
of this body, to be submitted at its next stated sessions,
and the brother Waddel and Moderwel be that
committee.
The committee to whom was refered the session
book of the church in this city reported favourably
and the book was approved up to page 154.
A recess was then ordered, to give place for the business

of the Missionary Society.
After the recess presbytery again convened. On motion resolved that
a committee of two be appointed to draft a report on the state of Education
within our bounds to be transmitted to the board of Education
of the General Assembly, also a report by the same committee on missions,
to be transmitted to the board of missions of the same body; and that
brethren Church and Chamberlain be that committee.
Presbytery adjourned to meet at this place on Monday morning at
6 oclock. Concluded with prayer.




Monday, morning, April 7th 1828.
Presbytery met according to adjournment. Constituted with prayer.
Agreeable to a previous resolution Mr. Wm. B. Richards was on yesterday
afternoon licensed to preach the everlasting gospel, as a probationer,
according to the form prescribed in the book of discipline, in the
presence of a large congregation.
On motion brother Stiles was chosen our delegate to the General
Assembly for the present year, and the Clerk was ordered to make
out his commission to that body in due form.
The following sacramental meetings were appointed to be held

in several destitute churches within our bounds: viz.
Resolved, that a meeting commence at Eatonton on Friday before
the 3d Sabbath in April, and that Brethren Brown, Church, Beman
and Chamberlain attend that meeting.
Resolved that a three days meeting commence in Milledgeville
on Friday before the 2nd Sabbath in June
and that Brethren, Brown, Talmage, Chamberlain,
and Patterson attend that meeting.
Resolved, that a meeting commence at Hopewell Crawford
co. on Friday before the 5th Sabbath in June, and
that Brethren Waddel, Chamberlain, Patterson and
Stratton attend.
Resolved, that a three days meeting commence at Bethel
Jasper, co. on Friday preceding the 4th Sabbath
in July next, and that Brethren Goulding, Church,
Chamberlain, and as many others as can, attend.
Resolved, that a four days meeting commence at Fayetteville
in Fayette co on Thursday before the 3d Sabbath
in August next, and that Brethern Waddel,
Moderwell, Chamberlain, Kirkpatrick, and Gamble attend.

The Clerk was directed to notify the absent Brethren of their
appointments. Concluded with prayer and the Presbytery
adjourned to meet at McDonough Henry co. on the 2nd Saturday
in August next at 12 Oclock. Mo.

Thyatira Church, 26th July 1828.
Mr. James S. Fleming, formerly a member of Hebron church
but sometime since moved without its bounds, betwixt whom
and Daniel Bryson a difference existed while both were members
of Hebron Church, which was tried by the session of said
Church and issued in the suspension of both parties from
the privileges of the church applied here for a hearing of the
case, to the Moderator of the session appointed by Presbytery
in August, at Athens in 1826. There not being any member
of the session of Hebron present, the Moderator called in
several helps from different churches, who were present,

and a session was constituted composed of the following
members, viz, Moses Waddel, Moderator, of Athens, John
King, of Sandy Creek, Richard Saye, of Fairview, Joseph
Ratchford, of Thyatira, and William Turk, of New
Lebanon. Mr. Fleming came forward and acknowledged
that he had acted in an unchristian manner in
what he had formerly said to and of Mr. Bryson,
for which he had sincerely repented and begged
forgiveness of God; and that if he had an opportunity
of seeing Mr. Bryson, he would confess the same to
him, and ask his forgiveness. On which profession of repentance,
the session were unanimously of opinion
that Mr. Fleming might be justly restored to communion
in the Church. Certified by

McDonough August 9th 1828. 74. Session.
The Presbytery of Hopewell met according to adjournment,
and was opened by the Moderator, with a sermon from
Hebrews 10: 31. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands

Calls, supplications &c. were ordered to be brought forward.
Joseph Hollingsworth, a ruling elder from Smyrna, petitioned
for supplies. A petition was presented from the church of
New Lebanon praying to be received under our care,
and granted supplies. The prayer was granted.
A petition from sundry persons in Hall co. was presented
praying supplies.The consideration of the
petition was deferred.
Mr. Matthew J. Caldwell, a ruling elder from the
church at Forsyth appeared and took a seat.
Resolved, that the members of this presbytery apply

annually to the congregations under their care for contributions
to defray the expenses of a commissioner to the General Assembly,
and other contingent expenses, and that these contributions be
handed to presbytery at their spring sessions.
The stated Clerk presented a report as directed by the presbytery
at Decatur, of the number of times each member of the presbytery
has been absent since the act defining the boundary between
this presbytery and that of Georgia, which after being
considered, recommitted to a committee consisting of Drs.
Waddel and the clerk, who was directed to revise and compare
the transcript of the minutes of this presbytery with the original
and report on this subject at the next Spring sessions.
Dr. Waddel rendered reasons for absence from the three
days meeting in Crawford co. which were satisfactory.
Mr. Stratton gave reasons for not fully complying with
the directions of presbytery, in preaching in Crawford
co. which were considered and sustained.
Mr. Gamble reported that he had fulfilled his presbyterical
Appointments.
Mr. Chamberlain reported, that he had complyed with

with the orders of presbytery, and had attended all his
presbyterial appointment.
Mr. Kirkpatrick reported that he had preached at
Smyrna and complyed with the directions of
Presbytery.
Thomas F. Scott, a candidate for licensure under our care delivered
to presbytery and Exegesis on the subject assigned
him at our last stated sessions as a part of trial prior
to licensure, which was submitted to a committee consisting
of Messrs Kirkpatrick and Talmage to report
on Monday morning
Brother Moderwell appeared in presbytery, and
reasons for tardiness and took his seat.
An application from the church in Forsyth Monroe, co.
for supplies from this time till next spring sessions
was submitted, and the consideration of it defered.
Mr. Cason, an Elder from the Hopewell church, Crawford,
co. appeared in presbytery and took a seat.
Mr. Scott was examined on the first 8 chapters of
the confession of Faith, and his examination was

sustained as part of trial prior to licensure.
Mr. Church rendered satisfactory reasons for absence from
the three days meeting at Eatonton.
Mr. Samuel J. Cassells, delivered a sermon from Gal: VI. 15 the
subject assigned him as part of trial previous to licensure
which was considered and sustained.
Presbytery adjourned, to meet in this place on Monday
morning at 7 Oclock. Concluded with prayer;


McDonough, Monday, 11th August 1828.
Presbytery met agreeable to adjournment, and was
constituted with prayer. Members present as on Saturday.
The minutes of the last session were read.
The committee to whom was referred the Exegesis of Mr. Scott
reported, and recommended that it be sustained as
past of trial prior to licensure.
Brother Chamberlain reported the following churches organized
since our last sessions, viz, A church at South Liberty,
Wiles, co. consisting of 14 members. A church at Zebulon, Pike, co.
consisting of 12. members. A church at Newnan, Coweta co.

with 12 members. A church in Forsyth, Monroe, co. consisting
of 14 members.
Resolved, that whereas the committee appointed by the
presbytery at Decatur, DeKalb co. August 1827. to compile
a history of the Presbyterian Church in Georgia, has
failed to fulfill the duties imposed by that resolution; It is,
therefore, ordered that Dr. Waddel & Mr. Goulding be a committee
to prepare for publication a history of the presbyterian
church in this state, and that they report at the next spring
sessions on this subject.
The committee to whom was assigned the duty at our last stated
sessions, of preparing a system of by-laws for the future
government of this body, reported, and the report being considered
was on motion, recommitted to a committee consisting
of the brethren Moderwell and Church, to report
before the rising of presbytery.
Presbytery to examine John Harrison and James C. Patterson
on Theology, natural and revealed, church history and government
preparatory to their ordination: and at the same time
Samuel J. Cassells, a candidate for licensure, was examined on

the subjects required by our book of discipline prior to licensure.
The examination of the several candidates was sustained as
parts of trial. Mr. Harrison then delivered a sermon on John
3: 19. and James C. Patterson one from Gal. 6: 14. the subjects
assigned them as parts of trial preparatory to ordination,
which sermons were considered and sustained.
The several parts of trial exhibited to presbytery by Samuel
J. Cassells, having been sustained, it was resolved that his trials
be now closed, and he be forthwith licensed: and having satisfactorily
answered the questions appointed to be put to candidates,
he was licensed to preach the gospel as a probationer
for the holy ministry within our bounds, or wherever else he
may be regularly called.
The trials of brethren Harrison and Patterson having been
approved by presbytery: Mr. Moderwell preached an ordination
sermon from Acts 24: 25, And as he seasoned of
righteousness, temperance, and judgement to come, Felix
trembled, and answered, Go the way for this time, when I have
a convenient season I will call for thee. The brethren were then
after satisfactorily answered the questions appointed to

be put to candidates for ordination, solemnly set apart
to the full exercise of the gospel ministry, as evangelists
by prayer and the imposition of the hands of the presbytery,
and the giving of the right hand of fellowship.
Dr. Waddel then delivered a suitable charge to the newly
ordained brethren, after which by invitation of the Moderator,
their seats as members of presbytery.
Mr. William K. Patton, was introduced to presbytery desiring
to be received under our care as a candidate
for the office of the gospel ministry. Mr. Patton was examined
as to his acquaintance with experimental
religion, and the motives inducing him to seek to enter the
office of the ministry. His examination being approved by
presbytery, Matthew 4. Chapter, first 10 verses was assigned
him as the subject of a critical exercise, and Quomodo
peccatum originale propagatum fuit, as the subject of an
Exegesis to be delivered at our next stated sessions.
Resolved, that Mr. Chamberlain, be appointed the agent
of this body to visit Columbus as early as practicable, in
order to organize a church to ascertain which of the lots

appropriated for churches is most eligible, and that may probably
be obtained for the use of the presbyterian church, and to employ
such means to procure it as shall be found to be necessary.
Presbytery made appointments for meetings at the following places,
to wit,
1st. At Oak Grove, Morgan co. to commence on Thursday before
the third Sabbath in October, to be attended by Messrs Chamberlain,
Goulding, Church, Stratton, and Richards.
2nd. At Milledgeville, to commence on Thursday evening before the
second Sabbath in November, to be attended by the brethren Waddel,
Church, Patterson, and Stratton.
3rd. At Macon, to commence on the Thursday evening before
the third Sabbath in November, to be attended by Messers. Church
Talmage, Chamberlain and Patterson.
4th. At Hopewell, Crawford, co. to commence on Thursday
before the second Sabbath in October, to be attended by
Messrs. Dr. Waddel, Chamberlain, Stratton, and Patterson.
Presbytery adjourned to meet tomorrow morning at
sunrise. Concluded with prayer.

McDonough, Tuesday, 12th August 1828.
Presbytery met according to adjournment, and was
constituted with prayer. Members present as on yesterday.
The minutes of the last session were read.
The committee to whom was referred the preparation of a system
of by-laws for the government of this Presbytery submitted
the following report, which was read and
adopted: Vis,
1. That the rules for judicatories recommended by the General
Assembly, and adopted by this body be read at the commencement
of each stated session.
2. That the moderators be always appointed by ballot.
3. That during the sessions of Presbytery not more than
two of the brethren shall be engaged in the service
of the sanctuary at the same time.
4. That the stated clerk be required to bring with him to
each and every session of presbytery a copy of the Confession
of Faith.
In addition to the meetings appointed on yesterday
presbytery proceeded to make the following; Vis,

5th. In Forsyth, Monroe, co. To commence on Thursday before the fourth
Sabbath in August, to be attend by Messrs. Chamberlain, Gamble,
Stratton, and Richards.
6th. At Harmony, DeKalb, co. to commence on Thursday, before the
first Sabbath in September, to be attended by Messrs. Kirkpatrick,
Chamberlain, Gamble, Pharr, and Wilson.
7th. In Augusta, to commence on the Friday before the meeting of the
Synod of South Carolina and Georgia, to be attended by Messrs.
Dr. Waddel, Goulding, Church, Chamberlain, Patterson, &c.
5th. At Jackson, Butts, co. to commence Friday, before the third Sabbath
in September, to be attended by Messrs. Gamble, Kirkpatrick,
Stratton and Richards.
Brethren Church and Wilson, were ordered to supply each one
Sabbath between this and the next spring sessions at New Lebanon,
Franklin, co. and administer the Lords supper.
Mr. Talmage and Mr. Harrison asked and obtained leave of absence
from the present sessions of Presbytery.
Ordered, that Messrs Chamberlain and Stratton visit the churches
in Coweta, co. and Zebulon, Pike, co. each one time, and administer
the Lords Supper, and that Mr. Kirkpatrick visit

Coweta, twice before the next stated sessions.
Ordered, that Messrs. Brown, Alexander, Church and Beman
visit South Liberty, Wilkes, co. before the next stated meeting of
presbytery, and hold a three days meeting, giving one month
previous notice.
Ordered, that brother Harrison visit the people on Wahoo Creek, Hall,
co. at least on one Sabbath before the next stated meeting of Presbytery.
Resolved, that at all the three and four days meetings appointed
by presbytery, where there is no stated pastors, it shall nominate some
one of the brethren to preside, who may be directed to attend.
In accordance with this resolution, presbytery nominated the following
brethren to preside at the meetings appointed during the present
sessions; Vis,

Mr. Scott was directed to prepare a Lecture on the 133 Psalm, and a sermon
on Isaiah 32: 17. to be delivered as parts of trial preparatory to
licensure at our next stated sessions.
Presbytery assigned Mr. William B. Richards, a licentiate our care
Malachi 4 chapter the subject of a lecture, and Rev. 3: 20, the
subject of a sermon as parts of trial prior to ordination to be
delivered at our next stated sessions.
Ordered, that should the trials of Mr. Richards be sustained, he be
then ordained, and that Mr. Goulding preach the ordination sermon
and Mr. Chamberlain be his alternate, that Dr. Waddel preside and give
the charge and Mr. Gamble be his alternate.
Concluded with prayer, and presbytery adjourned to meet in
Forsyth, Monroe, co. on the first Saturday in April 1829. at 10 Oclock

Augusta December 5th, 1828. 75. Session.
Agreeable to a regular citation a pro re nata Presbytery
met at the time and place of date, to investigate
reports unfavorable to the moral character of the Rev.
William Moderwell a member of this Presbytery.
The meeting was opened with a sermon by the Moderator from
2. Timothy III. 15. Constituted with prayer.

Dear Sirs,
I am constitutionally required to call a

pro re nata Presbytery to assemble in the Presbyterian church, in
the city of Augusta, on the first Friday of December next, in order
to investigate some reports very unfavorable to the character of
one of our members, injurious to the cause of Religion in general
and to the interests of our church in particular. As also to receive
any Candidates for the ministry, should they present themselves to
be taken under the care of Presbytery.
Fail not, if possible, to attend.
M. Waddel, Modr. H. Presbytery.
On motion, resolved that Mr. Moderwell be now required to answer
to the general charge against him, specified in the citation.
To the general charge of intemperance, in the citation, Mr. Moderwell
plead guilty; and professed penitence for the same; and
voluntarily promised a total abstinence from ardent spirits in
future.
Samuel McNair, an Elder of the Church in Columbia County appeared,
and took a seat.
Rev. Nathan Hoyt presented a regular dismission from the
Presbytery of Albany with a request to be received as a member
of this Presbytery. He was unanimously received.

A petition was presented from a church in the County of Columbia,
called Mount Olive, to be received under the care of this
Presbytery. The petition was granted.
Presbytery resumed the consideration of Mr. Moderwells case.
On motion, resolved, that Mr. Moderwell be suspended from the
office of the gospel ministry for twelve months from this date,
unless sooner restored by Presbytery.
Adjourned to meet at the Lecture Room tomorrow morning
10 Oclock. Concluded with prayer.


Augusta December 5th 1828
Presbytery met according to adjournment. Constituted
with prayer. Members present as above. The minutes of our last
session was read. Rev. Mr. Hoyt was invited to take his seat
as a regular member of this Presbytery.
Mr. John Cunningham, an Elder of the church in Greensboro
appeared and took a seat.

Mr. Isaac W. Waddel was proposed as a candidate for the holy ministry
under the care of this Presbytery. Mr. Waddel was then examined
on experimental religion, and the motives influencing
him to seek admission into the gospel ministry. His examinations
were sustained, and Mr. Waddel received as a candidate under
our care. As parts of trial, Romans VIII. 18-23 inclusive were assigned
him as a critical exercise - the first ten chapter of the Confession
of Faith - and the question, An Christus Deus est as an Exegesis.
A letter was received from the Rev. Francis Cummins D. D. assigning
reasons for absence, which were sustained.
On motion, resolved unanimously, that the stated Clerk do send
to Mr. Moderwell, and to the session of each church under the care
of this Presbytery, a written copy of the sentence of suspension passed
upon Mr. Moderwell, and inform them that the sentence precludes
him from preaching, from public exhortation, from administering gospel ordinances,
& from solemnizing marriages. But it is not expected nor desired that the
sentence should be publicly read in the Churches. Presbytery adjourned.

postponed at the request of Mr. Scott till our next stated
sessions. His lecture and critical exercise were considered
and sustained.
Mr. Carlisle P. Beman a licentiate under our care,
having assigned sufficient reasons for not attending,
and receiving ordination as an evangelist at our last
stated sessions; and having been presented from the congregation
of South Liberty, Wilkes, co. requesting Mr.
Beman to undertake the pastoral charge of said congregation:
Presbytery presented the call, and it was
by him accepted. On motion, resolved, that the trials
assigned him at the spring sessions of 1828 be his trials
prior, to ordination, and that he be ordained on Saturday
preceding the second Sabbath in July next at South Liberty
Wilkes, co. and that Mr. Hoyt preach the ordination sermon,
and Mr. Patterson be his alternate, that Dr. Brown preside
and give the charge, and Mr. Goulding be his alternate.

Forsyth, Monday Morning 9 Oclock, April 6th 1829.
Presbytery met according to adjournment and was constituted
with prayer. Members present as on Saturday. The minutes
of the last session were read.
Rev. Mr. Stiles appeared, rendered reasons for tardiness and
took his seat.
The following churches lately organized, were reported, and their
representatives took seats as members of presbytery: viz, from the
church in Greenville, Meriwether, co. Elijah Reeder -: from the
church in Thomaston, Upson, co. Archibald Bruce -: from the
church in LaGrange, Troup, co. James H. Cameron -: from the
church at Nazareth, Hall, co. Samuel Finaly. A church
was reported as organized in Columbus, Muscogee, co. consisting
of five members.
Mr. Chamberlain rendered reasons for not executing the
agency assigned him to Columbus, at our last stated sessions.
His reasons were unanimously sustained.
The several petitions from destitute churches laid before Presbytery
were on motion, referred to a committee on supplies consisting
of Messrs. Gamble, Talmage, and Bryan, to report before the

conclusion of the present sessions.
A petition was presented from divers persons residing in the
counties of Walton, Newton, DeKalb etc. praying the licensure
of Mr. Samuel T. Pharr, a layman, to preach the gospel, which
petition, was on motion laid on the table.
William B. Richards, a candidate for ordination, was examined
on the different subject prescribed by our book of discipline,
and having delivered a lecture on the subject assigned
him at our last stated sessions preparatory to ordination, it
was resolved that the several parts of trial now exhibited be
sustained, and that he be ordained this afternoon.
Mr. Hambden C. Carter, a candidate for licensure produced
an Exegesis, and a critical exercise on the subjects
assigned him at the sessions in August 1826, which were
considered and sustained as parts of trial preparatory to licensure.
Presbytery assigned Mr. Carter Acts 17: 30. the subject
of a popular discourse, and the I Apostles of John 5: 7 & 8,
the subject of a lecture, to be delivered during the present
sessions prior to Licensure.

Messrs. Hoyt and Bryan were appointed a committee to prepare
for publication a notice in reference to a certain person, calling
himself Johnston travelling through the country professing to be
a Presbyterian or Independent minister, to report before the rising
of Presbytery.
Presbytery proceeded to the ordination of Mr. Richards. Mr.
Goulding preached the sermon from I Timothy III. 1. This is a true
saying: If any man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good
Work. Mr. Richards having satisfactorily answered the questions appointed
to be put to candidates for ordination, he was set apart to the
full exercise of the gospel ministry by prayers and the imposition
of the hands of the Presbytery. After which Dr. Waddel delivered
a suitable charge to the newly ordained bishop, and by invitation
he took his seat as a member of this body.
Mr. Carter delivered a lecture on the subject assigned him
On motion, resolved, that the anniversary of the missionary society be
the order of the day for this evening at early candle light.
Congregational reports were called for, and referred to a committee
consisting of Messrs. Wilson and Alexander, to prepare the statistical
report, to be presented to the next General Assembly, and report before

Reports on the state of religion within our bounds was refered to
Messrs. Talmage and Lumpkin, to prepare a narrative of the

Presbytery met pursuant to adjournment, and was constituted

The committee appointed to examine the session books of Fairview
and Alcovia reported favorable and they were approved.
The committee to whom was referred the case of a certain vagrant,
called Johnston, report; - that it is expedient for Presbytery

to take some measure to prevent this man from further imposing
on our churches and the community at large, and therefore
would submit the following resolution: Whereas a certain person calling
himself by the name of Johnston, has, for several months past, been
travelling through this country, claiming the characters of a minister
of the gospel, either of the Presbyterian or Independant Churches: and
as this Presbytery upon good evidence, is satisfied, that the said Jonhson
is unable to produce any proper testimonials as a clergyman, we
therefore feel in duty bound to caution the churches under our
care against receiving, or giving any countenances to this man
as a preacher of the gospel, until he is able to take some steps
to remove the dark suspicion which at present justly hangs
over his character; which report and resolution were adopted.
The committee to whom was refered the Exegesis of Mr. Waddel,
reported, and recommended that it be sustained.
The presbytery proceeded to the order of the day, the examination
of Mr. Carter on the subjects required by our book of discipline,
and Mr. Carter having delivered a popular discourse on
the subject assigned him, it was resolved that the several
parts of trial now exhibited be sustained, and that the candidate

be immediately licensed to preach the everlasting gospel.
Mr. Carter having satisfactorily answered the questions appointed
to be put to candidates to be licensed the presbytery
did license him to preach the gospel within its bounds or wherever
else he may be regularly called.
Mr. Chappel had leave of absence during the remainder of
the present sessions.
The Rev. Alexander Kirkpatrick through the stated clerk requested
a dismission to join the Presbytery of South Carolina, to which
request presbytery acceded.
The consideration of the petition for Licensure of Samuel T.
Pharr, laid on the table yesterday, was resumed. He was introduced
to Presbytery and examined on experimental religion, and the
motives which induced him to seek the office of the gospel
ministry. His examination was sustained, and he was
directed to prepare for a general examination on the
Confession of Faith, and John 10: 28. was assigned him as
the subject of a sermon to be exhibited at our next sessions
as part of trial preparatory to licensure.
Mr. Farewell Jones a member of the church in Forsythe,

appeared before Presbytery, and expressed a desire to be taken under
its care as a candidate for the gospel ministry. He was examined
on experimental religion and the motives which had induced
him to seek the office of the ministry, which examination was sustained,
and presbytery having received satisfactory testimonials
of his literary attainments, he was assigned Heb. 7: 1, 2, 3, the subject
of a lecture, and Isa. 4 Chapter the subject of critical exercise;
Heb: 12: 22, 23. the subject of a sermon, and Quid evangelica fides
sit? the theme of an exegesis, and Mr. Jones was directed to prepare
for an examination on the Confession of Faith as parts of trial previous
to his licensure.
Mr. Cason and Mr. Allen had leave of absence from the remaining
sessions of this body.
Mr. Dennis M. Winson, a licentiate of the Presbytery of Oneida, produced
a regular dismission from that body to connect himself with
this presbytery, and was accordingly received under our case as
a probationer for the gospel ministry.
The committee to whom was refered the duty of devising means for supplying
the destitute churches under the care of this Presbytery, reported
and their report being considered, was adopted, and is as follows;

That to gratify the wishes of the members of the churches and congregations
of Thomaston in the county of Upson, LaGrange in Troup county,
Zebulon in Pike county, and Greenville in the county of
Merriwether, we would recommend the Rev. Edmund
Lanier be appointed to attend these churches, giving to
each church one sabbath in each month.
We recommend that Mr. Carter be sent to Coweta and
Fayette counties for three months.
They also recommend that Mr. Gallaher be requested to
supply the churches of Franklin and Hall counties.
The committee would further recommend to Presbytery
to request Mr. Winston to supply the churches of Forsyth
and Hopewell each one sabbath in the month; and to
visit Monticello and Clinton with a view to the organization
of churches.
They would also recommend that presbytery appoint a
four days meeting at Columbus, at as early a day as
practicable.
They recommend that a four days meeting be held at
Coweta on the third sabbath in June, and that Messrs.

It being desirable that Mr. Dennis M. Winston a licentiate under
our care should receive ordination as an evangelist. Presbytery
proceeded to assign him Jeb. 8: 14. the subject of a sermon to be
delivered at our next stated sessions as a part of trial preparatory
to ordination: Ordered that Joseph C. Stiles preach the
ordination sermon, and that John S. Wilson be his alternate -,
that Dr. Waddel preside and give the charge, and Mr. Church
be his alternate.
Appointments were made for meetings at the following times and
Places: Viz,
1st. A four days meeting in Columbus, to commence on Thursday
before the 2nd sabbath in May to be attended by Messrs. Patterson
Stiles, Lanier, Stratton, and Richards.
2nd. A four days meeting at Mount Zion, Hancock co, to commence
on Thursday before the 2nd Sabbath in May to be attended by
Dr. Brown, and Messrs. Talmage and Beman.

General Assembly.

A call was presented from the Presbyterian Church in

of Mr. Talmage, were defered until our next stated session.
On motion, resolved, that the moderator address a letter to Mr.
Ephraim S. Hopping a licentiate under our care, admonishing
him of his delinquency in not attending the meetings of Presbytery.
The treasurer of this body was directed to pay to Dr. Waddel, the
stated Clerk of Synod, the sum of $8.33 due from this presbytery
for fees of office.

The Revd. Jesse Stratton was appointed temporary clerk.
The candidate being called upon for parts of trial assigned
by a previous Presbytery, delivered a popular sermon from
the gospel according to John, 1st Chap. & 1. verse, In the beginning
was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was
God.
The presbytery then proceeded to examine the candidate upon the
Latin and Greek languages, Natural and Moral Philosophy,
Natural and Revealed Theology, Church History and Government;
also as to his acquaintance with experimental religion, and his
views for desiring the sacred office of the Ministry - all which
examinations were unanimously sustained.
On motion, resolved, that the Presbytery will proceed tomorrow, at
11 Oclock to the ordination of the candidate.

The Rev. Nathan Hoyt having been previously appointed by Presbytery,
preached the ordination sermon from 2nd Cor. 2 Chap. part of
verse 10th. And who is sufficient for these things?
Rev. John Brown D. D. appeared and took his seat.
The Moderator then proceeded by request of Doctor Brown to state
briefly the proceedings of presbytery preparatory to ordination, and
proposed the usual questions to the candidate, as laid down
in the confession of Faith of our church, which questions were answered
in the affirmative. The Moderator then proposed the usual questions
to the church and congregation, which in like manner, were answered
in the affirmative. The candidate was then ordained to the
sacred office of the gospel ministry by solemn prayer to Almighty
God, and be laying on the hands of the Presbytery. The right hand
of fellowship having been given to the newly ordained minister,
the Moderator proceeded to give a solomn charge, in the name of
God, first to the ministers, and then to the people, to be faithful in the discharge
of their natural duties; all which was concluded in the usual manner,
by prayers - singing - & by pronouncing the Apostolic Benediction.

The delivery of Mr. Winstons sermon previous to ordination, was
made the order of the day for tomorrow evening at candle lighting,
and on motion the farther consideration of the ordination
was deferred for the present.
Elder Samuel Baldwin from the church of Union, Oglethorpe
co. appeared and took a seat.
Mr. Goulding, the former moderator, reported that for reasons which
he assigned, he had not complyed with the request of the last
Presbytery,in writing to Mr. E. S. Hopping, a licentiate under our
care, who has been delinquent in attending on meetings of presbytery.

Mr. Goulding was requested to lake the earliest opportunity
to address an affectionate letters to Mr. Hopping expolutating
with him, on the duty of attendance on presbyterial meetings.
Whereas the Rev. Garrett Hallenbeck, late in the employ of the
Georgia Domestic Missionary Society, has acted in an immoral
and unchristian manner, whereby reproach has been
brought on the church of Christ, and the sacred office of the
ministry defamed: and whereas the said Hallenbeck went
out bearing testimonials, and recommendations from divers
brethren of this presbytery, who at that period entertained no
suspicions of the integrity and moral worth of Mr. Hallenbeck:
It is therefore on motion, resolved, that Drs. Brown,
Waddel, & Goulding, be a committee to whom this matter
is referred, to report before the conclusion of the present
sessions.
An application was received from Henry Safford through
the Rev. Mr. Chamberlain, for dismission from this body to
join the presbytery acceded to Mr. Saffords request, and
ordered that he be dismissed.

and transcript of the minutes of this presbytery with the original;
rendered satisfactory reasons for not fulfilling the
duty assigned them: and on motion brother Chamberlain
was added to the committee, and they were directed to

under our care, presented a lecture on the subject assigned
him at our last stated sessions which was considered &

Mr. Charles C. Mills, a ruling elder from the church of South
Liberty, Wilkes co. appeared and took a seat.
Rev. Carlisle P. Beman appeared and rendered satisfactory
reasons for tardiness took his seat.
John S. Fall, a ruling elder from the church at Oak=Grove appeared
in Presbytery and took a seat.
Messrs. Isaac W. Waddel & Farewell Jones were examined on
the Confession of Faith, as directed at our last stated session,
which examinations were sustained as parts of trial prior
to licensure.

Professor Goulding under whose instruction & direction Isaac
W. Waddel has pursued his Theological studies for some time
past, having been convinced that the licensure of the said candidate
during the present sessions of Presbytery would be desirable,
and having some time since appointed Luke 24: 25.
as the subject of a popular discourse, communicated his view,
to presbytery on this subject: Whereupon, on motion it was resolved,
That considering the urgent calls of vacant congregations
within our bounds, the presbytery do sanction the appointment
of professor Goulding on this subject, and that Mr. Waddel
preach a popular sermon on the subject assigned this evening
at 4 Oclock.
Presbytery proceeded to examine Messrs. Scott & Waddel
on Church History & Government, they having heretofore been
examined on Theology preparatory to licensure, which examination
was sustained.
After a recess presbytery convened, when John B. Smith presented
himself, being introduced by Dr. Brown, desiring to
be received under our care as a candidate for the
gospel ministry.

Presbytery having received testimonials of Mr. Smiths good mers
of character, and of his being in the communion of the
church proceeded to examine him on experimental religion
and the motives which influence him to seek the office of
the ministry, which examinations, were sustained, and
Presbytery assigned him an peccsum sit ns reale? as
the theme of an Exegesis, and Exodus 20: 8. the subject of a
critical exercise to be delivered at our next spring sessions
and Mr. Smith was directed to prepare for an examination
on the Latin, & Greek Languages.
Presbytery proceeded to hear the popular discourses of Thomas
F. Scott, & Isaac W. Waddel on the subjects heretofore assigned
them. These discourses were considered and sustained as parts
of trial preparatory to licensure, and presbytery having gone
through the several parts of trial required from candidates
for the sacred office of the ministry, resolved that they be licensed
this evening at the close of public worship, to preach the
gospel.
Messrs. Church & Patterson, appeared and rendered
reasons for tardiness, and took their seats.

The Rev. Mr. Boggs of the Presbytery of Georgia being present, was invited
and took a seat, as a corresponding member.
Mr. Wlliam K. Patton, delivered a lecture on the subject assigned
him at our last stated sessions, and was examined on the first ten
chapters of the Confession of Faith, which examination together with the
Lecture, was sustained.
A letter was received from the Rev. James Gamble rendering satisfactory
reasons for absence from our present sessions.
Mr. Winston proceeded agreeable to the order of yesterday to deliver
a discourse on the subject assigned him preparatory to ordination.
The young brethren Scott and Waddel were licensed to preach
the everlasting gospel, according to the resolution of the Presbytery, within
our bounds, or wherever they may be regularly called.
The Rev. Mr. Beman asked and obtained leave of absence from
the remaining sessions.
Concluded with prayer, and Presbytery then adjourned to meet
in this place on Monday morning at half past seven oclock.

Greensborough, half past 7. Oclock A. M. August 10th 1829.
Presbytery met pursuant to adjournment, and was constituted
with prayer. Members present as on Saturday. The minutes of
the last session were read.
The Rev. Henry Reid a member of the presbytery of South Carolina,
presented a dismission from that body to connect himself
with this presbytery. His dismission was recognized and he
took his seat as a regular member.
Mr. Theodore M. Dwight a member of the Presbyterian Church
of Athens was introduced to presbytery, expressing a desire to
be taken under our care, as a candidate for the gospel ministry.
Mr. Dwight was examined on experimental religion, and the
motives which induced him to desire the office of the ministry. His
examination was sustained, and Presbytery assigned him,
Num amina immerlalis sit? the subject of an Exegesis to
be delivered at our next stated sessions.
Mr. Dennis M. Winston, was examined on experimental religion
and the motives which had induced him to take upon him the office
of the ministry. He was also examined on Natural &
revealed Theology - on Church History & Government, - on the

Latin and Greek Languages - on Natural & Moral Philosophy,
& Astronomy - all which examinations together with the sermon delivered
on Saturday evening, were sustained, as parts of trial prior to ordination,
and it was ordered that Mr. Winston be ordained as an -
evangelist, this day at 11. Oclock A. M.
It being desirable that Mr. Samuel J. Cassells, a licentiate under
our care, should receive ordination as an evangelist. Presbytery
assigned him Rom. 5: 19th the subject of a sermon, and Matth.
15th: 41 - 42 the subject of a lecture to be delivered at our next session;
Ordered, that Dr. Waddel, preach the ordination sermon, and Mr.
Church be his alternate, that Dr. Brown, preside and give the
Charge,and that Dr. Goulding be his alternate.
The Presbytery took up the consideration of the installation of Mr. Talmage
to the pastoral office of the Presbyterian Church in the city of Augusta
which had been deferred at our last spring sessions till the present
time: Whereupon, on motion, ordered, That the regular and solemn
induction of the Rev. Samuel K. Talmage into the office of
pastors of Christ Church in the city of Augusta take place on
the Saturday preceding the 1st Thursday in December next: and
it is further, ordered, that Mr. Reid preach the installation sermon

and Mr. Chamberlain be his alternate - that Dr. Brown preside
and give the charge, and Dr. Goulding be his alternate.
The elder Charles C. Mills, and David McLaughlin
requested and obtained leave of absence during the present
sessions.
Mr. McGruder a candidate for licensure under our care
reported himself, stating that in consequence of ill health, and
other engagements, he had as yet be unable to prosecute
his theological studies, but that he has not relinquished the design
of entering on the office of the holy ministry.
Presbytery proceeded to the ordination of Mr. Winston, where the
Rev. John S. Wilson preach a sermon from Rom. 11: 13. I magnify
mine office; an Mr. Winston, having satisfactorily answered
the questions appointed to be put to candidates to be
ordained: he was solemnly set apart by prayer to almighty
God, and the imposition of the hands of the presbytery, to the full
exercise of the ministry, as an evangelist. The right hand of
fellowship being given, and Dr. Waddel the presiding officer
having delivered a suitable charge to the newly ordained
minister, he took his seat as a member of this body.

A church organized in Hamilton, Harris co. was reported and received
under our care.
A church organized in Hasper, co. in the town of Monticello was reported
and received under our care.
An application from the Presbytery of Union sent up to this body
was read, requesting permission for the Rev. Daniel S. Batrick, and
Samuel A. Worcester, Missionaries among the Cherokee Indians,
who reside within the territorial limits of this Presbytery, to continue
their connexion with the Presbytery of Union. To this request the Presbytery
of Hopewell acceded; and the stated clerk is directed forthwith to
signify the Presbytery of Union their acquiescence in this accampment.
The consideration of the trials of Mr. Samuel T. Pharr, a
candidate for licensure under our care, were at his own
request, indefinitely postponed.
Mr. Groves, asked and obtained leave of absence the
remaining sessions.
Drs. Brown, Waddel, Goulding, and Messrs. Church, Chamberlain,
& Patterson were appointed a committee to take
into consideration the propriety of Licensing. Mr. Farewell

Jones during the present sessions. They reported instanter
and recommended, that Mr. Jones trials be continued:
Whereupon, presbytery assigned him John 1: 3rd the subject
of a sermon to be delivered at our next stated sessions
preparatory to licensure, and he is directed to prepare
for an examination on all the studies required be our
book of discipline.

On motion, resolved, that the formula for admitting members
to the communion of our church, recommended at our

sessions in Mount Zion, in April 1826, be again specially
recommended to be used by our missionaries in organizing
churches within our bounds.
Mr. M. Kay asked and obtained leave of absence
from the remaining sessions.
Dr. Waddel, & Messrs. Church, Chamberlain, & Bryant, were appointed
a committee to settle with Maj. Watkins the balance
due him for transcribing the minutes of Presbytery. The committee
forthwith, reported, that in order to settle the account of
Maj. Watkins, it is expedient that a contribution be made from
the members of Presbytery for this purpose, which was accordingly
done.
A proposition to recommend to the Synod of South Carolina
and Georgia a division of Hopewell Presbytery, was, after
considerable discussion, on motion postponed until our next
spring sessions for farther consideration: And it is ordered
that the several churches under the care of this Presbytery, be
required to send up at that time; their views on the proposed division,
either by their delegate, or in writing, addressed to the
Moderator: And it is further ordered, that publication of this

minute be made in the Charleston Observer for the information
of the churches.
Mr. Robinson, obtained leave of absence from the remaining
sessions.
The Rev. Francis Cummins D. D. with full consent of the church of
Siloam, Greensborough, resigned the pastoral office of said
church, which resignation was by Presbytery accepted, and the
church of Siloam, is hereby declared vacant.
A church organized at Hickory Grove, Hall co, since our last
stated sessions, was reported and received under our care.
The committee to whom was referred Mr. Hallenbecks case reported,
and their report being accepted is as follows; Viz,
That whereas it appears undeniably certain, & admitted by himself to
be so, that said Hallenbeck has been guilty of the crime of uncleanness
since he has been ordained to the work of the ministry, the
disgraceful effects of which have become known to us since
he has been employed as a missionary within our bounds; and
his usefulness as a minister has in consequence been destroyed,
and the causes of religion greatly injured and dispaced. We do
hereby recommend to this presbytery, to require the said Hallenbeck

to return to the stated clerk of this body the testimonials given
him by its members, at its sessions in Augusta, and to abstain
from the discharge of all ministerial duties within our
bounds; and that we do transmit this report and resolution to the
stated Clerk of the Presbytery of Albany to be by him submitted
to that Presbytery.
On motion, resolved, that the congregations delinquent in sending
up statistical reports, be required to transmit them immediately
to the stated clerk post paid, that he may be enabled to
make out the synodical report as early as possible.
On motion resolved, that beholding the fatal effects of intemperance
in our country, and the importance of making a firm stand
on this subject, that we as a presbytery resolve ourselves into
a temperance society, and that we observe total abstinence from
ardent spirits, except for medicinal purposes, and that we endeavor
so far as we can by precept & example to dissuade
others from the use of them.

Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave
to every man? I planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the
Increase. Mr. Cassells having satisfactorily answered the questions
appointed to be put to candidates for ordination he was set
apart by solemn prayer to Almighty God and the laying of the
hands of the Presbytery, to the full exercise of the gospel ministry
as an Evangelist. The right of fellowship was then given & Dr. Goulding
having delivered a suitable charge to the newly ordained minister,
he took his seat as a member of this body.

Dr. Goulding stated, that he had not complyed with the request
made at our last sessions, in writing to Mr. Ephraim S. Hopping
a licentiate under our care, who has been greatly delinquent
in attendance on Presbyterial meetings. His reasons for not
writing were sustained, and he was requested to attend to this
matter before our next meeting.
A letter rendering reasons for absence from the present
sessions was received from the Rev. Dr. Cummins. His reasons
were sustained.
The committee heretofore appointed to compare the Transcript
of the minutes of presbytery with the original, were on motion discharged
from the consideration of the subject.
The installation of the Rev. S. K. Talmage, pastor of Christ Church,

on this city, was made the orders of the day for this evening at a
quarter past 7. Oclock.
On enquiry it was ascertained that the brethren had generally attended
to their public appointments.
A letter addressed to the Stated Clerk from the Rev. Garrett Hallenbeck,
was read assigning reasons for not complying with the request of presbytery
in retaining certain testimonials given by its members to him as
a minister of the gospel in the employ of the Domestic Missionary Society.
His reasons for not returning said testimonials were considered satisfactory.
An abstract from the minutes of the Presbytery of Albany was also
laid before the body, from which it is ascertained that the said Hallenbeck
Has been deposed from the office of the gospel ministry.
Mr. Cassels asked and obtained leave of absence during the present sessions.
Presbytery took into consideration the case of Rev. William Moderwell
who was suspended from the exercise of ministerial office in the 5th
day of December 1828 for the space of twelve months, on a charge of
intemperance. On enquiry, it appeared from Mr. Moderwells own
confessions that he had, in the month of June last; grossly violated
the promise voluntarily made by himself of total abstinence from
the use of ardent spirits. After much enquiry, mature deliberation, and solemn

special prayer for divine direction, presbytery did, on motion, resolve
unanimously that the suspension of Mr. Moderwell from the holy office
of the ministry, be indefinitely continued.
On motion, a committee was appointed, consisting of the stated Clerk
And Dr. Thomas W. Alexander to prepare a circular, to be addressed
to the several Churches under our care in relation to duties they
owe to presbytery, and it is left discretionary with the committee to cause
said circular to be printed, or to circulate, it in manuscript.
Mr. John Pinney a graduate of Franklin College, and a
member in full communion in the presbyterian Church in
Athens, was introduce to Presbytery, as desiring to be taken under
our care as a candidate for the gospel ministry. Mr. Pinney was
examined as to his acquaintance with experimental
religion, and the motives inducing him to seek to enter
the office of the ministry - he was also examined on the Latin
and Greek Languages, on Natural & Moral Philosophy, on
Belles Lettres & Astronomy, which examinations were sustained
as parts of trial preparatory to licensure: and presbytery assigned
him, Num pena sceleratorum sempiterna sit? as the subject
of an exegesis. Presbytery had a recess till a quarter past

Presbytery met, and proceeded according to the order of the day, to
the installation of the Rev. Samuel K. Talmage. The Rev. Henry Reid
having preached a sermon from Acts of the Apostles 26: 25. Take
heed therefore unto yourselves, and to the flock over the which the
holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which
he hath purchased with his own blood: and Mr. Talmage and the
people of the congregation having taken upon them their mutual
obligations as pastors, and peoples, Dr. Waddel delivered a suitable
charge, and the exercises were concluded by prayer to God for
his blessing upon the relation now formed, and the congregation was
dismissed in the usual manner by singing and the apostolic
benediction.
Messrs. Dr. Waddel, Mr. Hoyt, and Mr. Talmage were directed to supply
each one sabbath at Lincolnton, before our next sessions.

1829, was taken up: After prayer for divine direction,
and much discussion in relation to the matter, its farther
consideration was deferred and made the order of the
day for this evening at candle lighting.

Samuel Groves a ruling elder from the church of Newhope
and William Turk a ruling elder from the church of
New Lebanon appeared in Presbytery and took seats.
Presbytery proceeded to the order of the day; viz, the consideration
of Mr. Moderwells case. Several members were heard
both for and against the removal of the suspension at this time.
Mr. Moderwell was also permitted to assign the reasons why
he desired its removal. On the question shall the suspension
of Mr. Moderwell be now removed? and the roll being called
it was decided in the negative, and his suspension was
continued. Concluded with prayer, and then adjourned to
meet in the Methodist church at 8 Oclock tomorrow morning.

Washington, severally reported and the records were approved.
The committee appointed to examine the records of the church
at Lincolnton reported and the book was approved with certain
exceptions; and the session of that church was directed
to correct and amend the inaccuracies in said record.
A letter was received from the Rev. Dr. Waddel giving satisfactory
reasons from the present sessions, and requesting
a dismission from this body at the present, or next stated

Presbytery proceeded to hear reports on the state of religion,
and having received a member of interesting statements, both written
and verbal, they were referred to a committee consisting of
Mr. Patterson, Mr. Talmage, and Mr. Fleming to prepare
a narrative of the state of religion within our bounds to be
laid before the next General Assembly; and to report before
the close of the present sessions.
The Rev. Mr. Mercer of the Baptist church, was invited
and took a seat as a correspondent.
On Motion, the ministers and elders, members of the presbytery
were individually called upon to state what had
been done in support of the missionary in their churches
respectively. It appeared that efforts have been generally
made to do something in this business. The amount
of contributions from the churches were paid over to the
financial committee of the missionary society.
A call was presented through the Presbytery to the revd.
Nathan Hoyt, for one half his ministerial labors from the
Presbyterian Church in Athens, which call was by Mr. Hoyt
accepted. And measures for his installation as pastor

of said church were postponed until our next stated sessions.
Presbytery had a recess until 4 Oclock P.M. to give place to
the annual meeting of the Georgia Domestic Missionary society.

Presbytery met. The committees appointed to examine the records of the
churches of New Lebanon and South Liberty reported and the books
were approved.
James K. Daniel a ruling elder from the church at Greensboro
appeared and took a seat.
Mr. M. Gander a candidate for the gospel ministry under our
care, reported verbally through Mr. Reid and desire to
be indulged by Presbytery until our next stated sessions to
present the parts of trial hitherto assigned him.
The revd. Joseph Y. Alexander appeared and having rendered
satisfactory reasons for tardiness took his seat.
Mr. F. Jones trials were continued it being understood
that he had repaired to some theological seminary for
the purpose of prosecuting his studies.

Dr. Pond a ruling elder from the church of Lexington appeared
and took a seat.
The revd. William Quillin of the Presbytery of Holstein
being present was invited and took a seat as a correspondent.
The consideration of the division of Hopewell Presbytery, which
subject was deferred until the present sessions was taken
up and after considerable discussion on the vote being
taken on the proposition to petition the Synod of South
Carolina and Georgia to divide this presbytery it was
unanimously decided in the negative.
It was stated that Mr. John Pinney a candidate for
the gospel ministry under our care to whom was assigned
the subject of an exegesis as a part of trial at our last
sessions, has since that time gone to the Theological Seminary
at Princeton in order to prosecute his theological
studies: ON motion his trials were continued.
The exegesis of T. M. Dwight was submitted to presbytery
and referred to a committee consisting of Messrs. Dobbins
and Alexander to examine and report tomorrow morning.

It being desirable that Mr. Isaac W. Waddel, a licentiate under
our care, should receive ordination as early as practicable
as an evangelist: Presbytery on motion assigned him Heb. 11. 5.
the subject of a sermon, and Gal. 5: 1-5 the subject of a lecture
to be delivered as parts of trial prior to ordination.
The petition from the church at Gainesville petitioning for
the ordination of Mr. Thomas F. Scott a licentiate under our
care, as an evangelist, the consideration of which was deferred
yesterday, was taken up, and the prayer of the petition
was granted. Presbytery assigned Mr. Scott as parts of trial
previous to ordination Psalm 19: 10, the subject of a sermon, and
Rom. 8: 18-26 inclusive the subject of a lecture. And it is hereby
ordered that the young brethren Waddel and Scott, be ordained
on Saturday before the second sabbath in May at
Gainesville, Hall county; and it is further ordered that
Mr. Church preach the ordination sermon, and Mr. McAlpin
be his alternate; that Mr. Pharr preside on that occasion, and
Mr. Wilson give the charge.
On enquiry it was ascertained that the brethren directed to
preach each one sabbath at Lincolnton had all discharged

that duty except Mr. Hoyt who had been prevented by
ill health. Concluded with prayer, and presbytery adjourned
to meet at 8 Oclock tomorrow morning.

The minutes of the last session were read.
A resolution was offered proposing the endowing a professorship
in the Theological Seminary lately established
by the Synod of South Carolina and Georgia,
and located at Columbia, South Carolina. After much
discussion, the matter was referred to a committee consisting
of Messrs. Stiles, Talmage, and Mills: and to report
before the rising of the present sessions.
Dr. Norman L. Chesters, a ruling elder from the
church at Gainesville appeared and took a seat.
The committee to whom was referred the exegesis of
Mr. Dwight reported, and it was sustained.

The following three and four days meetings were appointed.
1st. A four days meeting near Jackson, Butts County,
to commence on Thursday before the third Sabbath in
July, to be attended by Messrs. Chamberlain, Wilson,
Gamble and Waddel.
2nd. A four days meeting at Monticello, Jasper, co. to commence
on Thursday before the fifth Sabbath in May, to be attended
by Messrs. Richards, Patterson, Chamberlain, and
J. W. Waddel.
3rd. A four days meeting at Oak Grove, Jasper co., to commence
Thursday, before the first Sabbath in August, to be

The committee to whom was referred the subject of endowing
a professorship in the Southern Theological Seminary presented
their report which was adopted, and is as follows:
Highly sensible of the great importance to the Southern Church
of a Theological Seminary within the bounds of the Synod
of South Carolina and Georgia: Therefore,
Resolved, That the Hopewell Presbytery cordially approve
of the effort of the Synod of South Carolina and Georgia, to
establish the Theological Seminary at Columbia; and
they warmly recommend the Institution to the benevolence

and to the prayers of the churches within our bounds.
The same committee was directed to confer with the Presbytery
of Georgia, and ascertain whether that body feels a willingness
to unite with this Presbytery, should circumstances hereafter indicate
the propriety of attempting the establishment of a professorship
in said Seminary, and make report of their doings at
our next stated sessions.
On motion, a committee consisting of Messrs. Church and Dobbins
was appointed to prepare and forward a report on the subject
of educating poor and pious young men, for the gospel ministry,
to be laid before the Board of Education of the General
Assembly.
Rev. Carlisle P. Beman, by letter rendered reasons for absence
from the present sessions, which were sustained.
Mr. John B. Smith a candidate for licensure, presented a sermon
and exegesis on the subjects assigned him at our last
August sessions as parts of trial prior to licensure. The sermon
was sustained and the exegesis to a committee consisting of
Messrs. Dobbins and Alexander to report as early as
practicable.

On motion, the examination of Mr. Smith on the Latin and Greek
languages, was deferred until our next stated sessions; and
Presbytery assigned him Eph. 4: 30 the subject of a sermon
to be delivered as early practicable, as a part of trial preparatory
to licensure.
The committee to whom was referred Mr. Smiths exegesis, reported,
and the part of trial was sustained.

The Rev. John Boggs of the Presbytery of Georgia, presented a
dismission from that body to connect himself with this presbytery
which was accepted, and he took his seat as a member.
The Rev. Mr. Quillin of the Presbytery of Holstein, and
the Rev. Mr. Lanier of the Presbytery of West Tennessee
were invited and took seats as correspondents.
A petition from the First Presbyterian Church in Columbus for,
ministerial aid, was read, and on motion laid on the table.
It having been represented to this body, that the Presbyterian Church
of Burk county desired to be taken under our care: resolved,
that the prayer of said Church be granted, Provided, the
concurrence of the Synod of South Carolina and Georgia
can be obtained.
Mr. M. Gruder a candidate for licensure under our
care, read a lecture on the subject heretofore assigned
him which was considered and sustained as a part of
trial preparatory to licensure.
The consideration of measures for the installation of the Rev.
Mr. Hoyt as pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Athens, defered
at our last stated sessions until the present time, was taken

up: On motion, resolved, that the installation of brother Hoyt
take place on Saturday before the first Sabbathi n
September in Athens; and that Dr. Waddel preach the
installation sermon, and Mr. Talmage be his alternate &
that Mr. Boggs preside and give the charge to the pastor,
and Mr. Alexander be his alternate - and that President
Church deliver the charges to the people.
The Committee appointed at our last stated sessions to
confer with the Presbytery of Georgia on the propriety of attempting
to endow a professorship in the Theological Seminary
of the Synod of South Carolina and Georgia and located
in the Town of Columbia. S.C. not having been able to perform
the duties assigned them, were on motion, continued,
and directed to report at our next stated sessions.
A verbal request through brother Church, was made to
presbytery by Mr. Farewell Jones, a candidate for licensure
under our care, to be dismissed from this body
to join some association in the North. It was on motion
resolved, that Mr. Jones application be referred to
a committee consisting of Messrs. Church and

Presbytery entered upon the consideration of the Rev-
Mr. Moderwells case, whose indefinite suspension from
the gospel ministry was continued at our last stated sessions.
After a few remarks the matter was postponed to give place
to the order of the day, the delivery of Mr. Pattons popular
discourse.
Mr. Patton proceeded in obedience to the will of Presbytery
to deliver a sermon on the subject previously assigned
him, which was considered and sustained as part of
trial prior to licensure; and it is ordered that he be
licensed this morning immediately after the conclusion
of the public exercises at the stand.
The Georgia Presbyterian Education Society having adjourn-
from Athens to this place, to meet at 10 Oclock this morning,
it was ordered that presbytery have a recess to give

August 7th 1830, 11 Oclock, A.M.
Presbytery met. The consideration of the case of Mr. Moderwell
was resumed, when a motion was made to remove the suspension.
It being desirable that presbytery should have all the information
possible on this subject: on motion, ordered that a
letter addressed to the Presbytery and other verbal information
understood to be in possession of the members present
relative to the moral conduct of Mr. Moderwell since our
last stated sessions, be exhibited to the Presbytery. The facts
disclosed from these sources amounting in the opinion of the
presbytery to new charges against him of immorality unbecoming
a christian and a minister of the gospel, his suspension
was unanimously continued.
Presbytery proceeded according to the order of this morning
to license Mr. W. K. Patton to preach the gospel of Christ
in the usual manner.
The committee to whom was referred the petitions of the churches
of Fayetteville and Greenville praying the ordination
of Hampden C. Carter a licentiate under our care

as an evangelist, reported, that they had conferred with Mr.
Carter and that he was willing to receive ordination, and
recommended that measures be taken accordingly:
Whereupon Presbytery assigned him Malachi 3: 14. the subject
of a sermon, and the four first verses of the same
chapter the subject of a lecture to be delivered prior to
ordination: And it is ordered that he be ordained as an
evangelist on the Saturday preceding the second Sabbath
in October, in Fayette County near Fayetteville; and
that Mr. Wilson preach the ordination sermon and
Mr. Scott be his alternate, that Mr. Gamble preside
and give the charge.
On motion, resolve, that the spring sessions of this presbytery
be hereafter called the annual meeting and
that the autumnal sessions be called the semiannual
meeting, and that the moderator who may be chosen
at these meetings shall preside at all the intermediate
meetings of Presbytery when present.
The committee to whom was referred the application
of Mr. Farewell Jones requesting a dismission from

the care of this body reported that the application was altogether
informal, and that he could not be dismissed.
The following three and four days meetings were appointed.

Mr. Tellemicus F. Montgomery, James Johnston, and Thomas
Jackson, were introduced to Presbytery, requesting severally
to be taken under its care as probationers [*as candidates?*] for the gospel
ministry. Having received satisfactory testimonials of their
of their literary acquirements, and of their being in the
communion of the Presbyterian Church; they were examined
as to their acquaintance with experimental religion, and
the motives which induced them to desire to desire to enter
the holy ministry, all which examinations were sustained as
parts of trial prior to licensure.

On motion the trials heretofore assigned Mr. McGruder, and
which he has not exhibited, were continued, and he was
directed to prepare for an examination on the first
seventeen chapters of the Confession of Faith at our next,
stated sessions.
Presbytery assigned Messrs Montgomery, Johnston and
Jackson, the first twelve chapters of the Confession of Faith
to be prepared for examination.
Congregational reports were called for and submitted to
the stated clerk to prepare the annual statistical report
to be laid before the Synod
Rev. Messrs. Hoyt and Talmage were nominated commissioners
to the next General Assembly and the Rev. Messrs. Patterson
and Isaac W. Waddel their alternates; and Elders Joseph
H. Lumpkin and William Dearing were nominated
lay commissioners to the same Assembly and Elders Redd
and Cunningham their alternates.
On motion resolved, that this Presbytery will hold its annual
meeting in Lexington, Oglethorpe co. on Thursday
before the first Sabbath in April 1831 at 11 Oclock A.M.

Hoyt, as Pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Athens. Dr.
Waddel preached the sermon from Prov. 11: 30. Woe that winneth
souls is wise. Mr. Boggs who presided, delivered the
charge to the minister, and Mr. Church to the congregation.
Presbytery when had a recess until 3 Oclock P.M.
3 Oclock P.M. Presbytery met. Mr. John Pinney, a candidate
under our care, now at the Princeton Theological
Seminary; applied through the Rev. Mr. Talmage of Augusta
for a dismission to be taken under the care of the Presbytery
of New Brunswick, N.J. Whereupon, resolved, that the Stated
Clerk, send a dismission to Mr. Pinney, and also state
the parts of trial which have been assigned him.
Resolved, that the Presbytery comply with the request of
the General Assembly as to a day of fasting, humiliation
and prayer and that we recommend to the churches
under our care to observe the 2nd Thursday in Nov.
next according to the request of the Assembly.

lecture from Mal. 3: 1 - 4 and a popular discourse from
Mal. 3: 14. the subjects previously assigned him as
parts of trial. He was then examined as to his experimental
acquaintance with religion, and on
natural and revealed Theology, on church history
and government etc. which several parts of trial were
considered and sustained.
After a few minutes of recess, Presbytery met, when
Mr. Scott alternate of Mr. Wilson, absent, preached
an ordination sermon from Ezekiel 33: 7, 8, 9. And
Mr. Carter having satisfactorily answered the questions
prescribed by the confession of Faith, was set
apart and ordained to the work of an Evangelist
by prayer and the imposition of the hands of the Presbytery:
The Moderator then gave an appropriate
charge to the newly ordained Evangelist; after which
the right hand of fellowship having been given, he took his seat
as a member of this body. Presbytery adjourned till the annual
