August The commencement exercises August 21, represented the highhght of summer aca-
f nmm(*nr>mfint demic activities. Sixty-six students, largest summer graduating class with Dr. G.

Malcolm Amerson, Professor of Biology, as a speaker. The event was climaxed by a
reception held in the dining hall of the Student Center for the graduates and guests.

Oglethorpe

Enrollment

Highest Ever

The Fall semester enrollment at Oglethorpe College has reached an all-time high of
1,189 students. This is an increase of almost 100 students for the same period of 1968.
This figure represents registrations for both Day and Evening Division.

Of the 1,189 students, approximately six hundred reside on campus with the remainder
commuting to the college. Oglethorpe College during the past few years has experi-
enced increased enrollment despite a trend of lesser enrollment in other small col-
leges throughout the United States.

Following dinner. Alumni are invited to attend the Oglethorpe VS Albany State
Basketball Game as guests of the College. For further information and reservations,

Conference Series
Scheduled

The Continuing Education Department recently planned a Drug Abuse Conference,
the first of a series geared to stimulate the community to acquire more factual know-
ledge offered by expert and then to discuss some of the most pertinent related cur-
rent social problems.

Over 100 participants in this conference designed to study the problem of drug abuse
from the viewpoint of the parents, educator, clergyman and law enforcing officer.
The overwhelming response and favorable publicity to this conference have set plans
in motion for a second typical conference.

Construction of November is the target month for construction on the new $300,000 science building.

To Begin

New Women's women students (approximately one hundred-seventy) are now housed in the new
Dnrmitrirv women's dormitory on the Oglethorpe campus. The building offers such comforts as
^ wall to wall carpeting, air conditioning and connecting bath for every two rooms.
The dedication of the dormitory is scheduled.

Swimming Swimming will be a year-round activity for Oglethorpe students. The new 25x60 foot
r 'I't' pool will be heated in cool weather and sport a plastic bubble top for winter swim-

Development

Campaign

News

Earl Dolive, President's Council Member, was named "Campaign Worker of the Month"
for his active participation in annual development and the resulting funds he raised
to support the 1969-1970 project. The project for the year for the Development Com-
mittee is the reconstruction of Lowry Hall for a single purpose library building. Mr.
John Spencer, Chairman of the Development Committee, commended all members
for their work but felt Mr. Dolive deserved this title for his especially praiseworthy
efforts.

paign, has organized a BREAKFAST for
all members on November 5, 1969 at 8:00
a.m. at the College Center.

Alumni News

Charles Horace Stewarts, Jr., 1922, Senior Director of the Peoples Bank of Carrolton,
Georgia, passed away January 21, 1969. He is survived by wife Lucille Long Stewarts,
formerly of lasper, Alabama, children and grandchildren.

1st Lt. Benjamin W. Sellers, Jr., class of 1966, is a member of the 1st Mobile Communi-
cations Croup, headquartered at Clark Air Base, that has earned the U. S. meritorious
service in providing consistent air traffic control during 1968.

John W. Hill, class of 1964, has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S.
Air Force upon graduation from Officer Training School at Lackland AFB. Lt. Hill, se-
lected for OTS through competitive examination, is being assigned to Reese AFB, Texas
for pilot training.

David Steward Davies, 1965, was married August 23 in Oceanview, Virginia, to Miss
Donna Adabelle Williford. Mr. Davies is presently the Director of Activities, Atlanta
Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

Dr. L. P. Davis, M.D., Class of 1964 will begin his residency in General Surgery at the
Eugene Talmadge Memorial Hospital in Augusta, Georgia as of July, 1, 1969.

Dr. Lane Hardy, PHD, 1955, chairman of the department of mathematics at Chicago
State College, has initiated a new career for himself in the teaching profession. Dr.
Hardy will teach a one-hour class in Essential Mathematics at a nearby Chicago high
school. Teaching at the secondary level is a new approach of the College Mathematics
department to help understand future high school teachers needs.

Basketball

Schedule for

1969-70 Season

Coach Tom Norwood expresses high expectations for the Petrel's performance during
the 1969-70 season. All alumni are encouraged to participate in the sport by attending
the games. A monthly schedule will appear in each forthcoming newsletter through-
out the basketball season.
