Three New Faculty
Members Now
Serving Oglethorpe

Oglethorpe College started the Spring se-
mester with three new faculty members.

Mrs. Susan K. Sholar is the new dean of
women. Dr. Edwin McKay Roberts is a
visiting lecturer in Physics, and Dr. Stuart
Barton Babbage joins the Humanities divi-
sion as an associate professor.

Mrs. Sholar was Phi Beta Kappa at the
University of South Carolina where she re-
ceived her A.B. and did graduate work in
history. She has taught history at high
schools in South Carolina and Virginia and
was director of Religious Education at the
Congregational Church in Arlington. Va.
Mrs. Sholar has served as an intelligence
analyst for OSS and as an intelligence spe-
cialist and interpreter for Air Force Intelli-
gence, both in Washington. D. C. She is a
South Carolina native.

Dr. Roberts received his B.S. from West
Texas State College and his Ph.D. from The
John Hopkins University. He has held re-
search positions with Socony Mobil Oil
Company in Dallas, the Los Alamos Scien-
tific Laboratory in New Mexico and Lock-
heed-Georgia Company in Marietta. Dr.
Roberts is a member of the American Phys-
ical Society and has had numerous articles
published in physics and chemical journals.

Dr. Babbage was born in New Zealand
and received his A.B. and M.A. from the
University of New Zealand. He holds Ph.D.
degrees from the University of lAindon and
the Australia College of Theology. He has
taught at colleges and universities in New-
Zealand and England and comes to Ogle-
thorpe after serving as a visiting professor
at Columbia Theological Seminary. He is
the author of six books, his latest "The
Mark of Cain: Studies in Literature and
Theology", having been published early
this year.

Dr. Noah Langdale. Jr.. President of
Cieorgia State College, will receive the Ogle-
thorpe Alumni Association's Bell Award on
March 18. Ihe School Bell Award breakfast
Will be held at the YWCA on Edcewood
Avenue, Room 305, at 8:00 A.M.

The award is made annually by the alum-
ni association to persons who have shown
an outstanding interest in the field of edu-
cation. Last year. Governor Carl Sanders
and his seventh grade teacher. Miss Emma
Wilkinson of Augusta were the recipients of
the award. Miss Wilkinson is an alumna of
Oglethorpe.

Dr. Langdale will deliser the major ad-
dress at this year's breakfast. Over 100
alumni and friends attended last year's af-
fair and a good turnout is expected this
year.

Admission to the breakfast is $1.75 and
tickets may be purchased at the door.

Dean's List for Fall
Semester Released

Ihe Dean's List for the Fall Semester.
1465-66 has been released by Dr. Cheever
Cressy. Dean of the College.

A total of twenty students made the list,
eleven of which list Atlanta as home. Five
other Georgians are included on the list
from Marietta, Smyrna. Forest Park. Savan-
nah, and Decatur. Two Floridians. and one
student each from Missouri and Pennsyl-
vania also qualified.

To earn a place on the Dean's List, a
student must attain an average of at least
91 during the trimester.

Necrology

Marion Randolph (Randy) Dodd, '30,

died December 24, 1965 in Atlanta.
Mr. Dodd served with the Atlanta
Police Department for 25 years and
retired from Municipal Court in Jan-
uary. 1960. He was active as a civic
leader and with young people. He
was most interested in the Atlanta
Baptist Training Union Association,
the Boy Scouts, and the Y.M.C.A.,
organizations for which he worked
untiringly. He was also voted Atlanta's
Most Popular Policeman.
T. C. VVooten, '34, passed away in
Orlando during October. His wife,
Mrs. Catherine I,. Wooten, '35. is now
residing at 2025 Peachtree Road, N.E.
in Atlanta.

Clarence Gordon Huej, "36, died at
his home in Ocala. Florida in Septem-
ber after a brief illness. At the time
of his death, he was a member of the
faculty at the St. Paul Parochial
School in Leesburg, Fla. He also was
a graduate student at the University
of Florida in Gainesville. He was the
son of Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Huey of
Port Charlotte. Fla.
Miss Sarah E. Callaway, '42, passed
away in October after a long illness.
She was residing in Atlanta at the
time of her death.

Jerrold J. Quin, '50, was killed last
August, v.hen struck by lightning
while golfing at The Louisville (Ga.)
Country Club. He had been band di-
rector and instructor at Louisville
Academy for the past 14 years.
Mrs. Sarah Miscally, a former board
member at Oglethorpe died recently
in Atlanta, where she had lived since
1910.

nations for new Hall of Famers with an

ter Susan (Mrs. Wayne Roberts) is a teacher

Fort Polk, La.

Tom Hunter, '46, drove several hundred
miles across the state of Illinois to root for
the Petrels when they played Southern Illi-
nois in Carbondale. Tom works in data pro-
cessing sales in Elmhurst, 111. Tom brought
his own cheering section that included his
lovely wife. Dale and his youngsters. Turk.
16. Erica, 12, and Sarah. 4.

Major Sheldon (Shelly) Godkin, '52, re-
ceived his current rank previously. He has
been in the U. S. Air Force since graduation
from Oglethorpe. He has been serving in
Southeast Asia with the rating of Senior
Pilot. He received his Masters in Public
Relations from Boston University in 1963.
He is married and has three daughters.
Mrs. D. W. Waddcll, '53, who now lives in
Bremen, Ga. is looking forward to her son,
William's graduation in June from Georgia
Tech. He made the Dean's List for the Fall
quarter. He and his wife Susan and daugh-
ter Mindy live in Atlanta. Susan is a senior
at Oglethorpe.

Connie Nesbit, '54, has been named Assist-
ant Branch Manager of the Citizen and
Southern National Bank's Roswell-Wieuca
office. She is a former president of the
Buckhead Business and Professional Wom-
en's Club.

Joseph H. Duckworth. '59, is teaching high
school English in Grosse Point. Michigan,
while working on a doctorate at Wayne
State LIniversity. He is married and is the
father of a three-month old child.
Nona Davis Belflower, '61, is living in An-
chorage, Alaska where her husband Estol
is stationed as a Flight Surgeon with the
USAF. She reports that she loves the chilly
northland.

Paula Hofnian, '62, is employed by the
U.S. Government as a math teacher in the
American High School in Baumholder, Ger-
many. 100 miles of Heidelberg. She has
traveled extensively throughout Europe, and
is becoming quite a ski enthusiast. Last sum-
mer she received an NSF scholarship to at-
tend a six weeks mathematics seminar con-
ducted by members of the staff of Stanford
University in Geneva, Switzerland.
Mrs. B. J. Parchman, '64, received an M.A.
in English from the University of Illinois in
August. She is presently teaching English
and Drama at Santarna High School in San
Diego, Cal.

A Booster Challenge Petrels Play In NCAA Tournament

/

Two charter members of the Booster Club
have offered a challenge to the rest of the
membership. It the challenge is met. the
Boosters will realize their goal of $10,000
for 1965-66.

The two Boosters, who prefer to remain
anonymous until the goal is met. have of-
fered a $1500 gift if the membership can
match it 2 to I by Alumni Day. May 14.
In other words, the Boosters need to raise
$.^,000 in order to get this $1,500.

The Booster Club is well on it's way to
meeting its announced goal for the first
time in several years. Gifts and pledges to
date total well over $6,000. so there is no
doubt of a successful year if this new offer
can be matched.

Now is the time for all Boosters to make
Iheir contribution, if they haven't done so
already, every $20.00 gift will mean $10.00
from the two "Mystery Boosters".

By meeting the Booster goal, the club
will aid the entire college budget in a most
crucial development year. Our hard work-
ins President Beall will certainly appreciate
the assistance, as will the Alumni Associa-
tion and Science Club, who will be stimu-
lated in making their goals.

The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels are wrapping up another fine basketball season, and
at press time were readying to play in the NCAA Regional at Durham. N. C. March 4
and 5.

The scrappy Petrels presented Coach Garland Pinholster with another 20-game winning
season, his 6th in his 10 year collegiate career, in earning the bid to go to Durham.

Coach Pinholster says this year's club has given him more thrills than any other Petrel
team. At the beginning of the season, the Petrel boss expected a "rebuilding year" and the
sophomore and freshmen-studded club won 20 of 25 encounters.

If the Petrels are successful in winning two games in Durham, they will qualify for
the NCAA College Division finals to be played in Evansville. March 9-11.
