Charles L. Towers

Elected Chairman

of Board of

Trustees

Charles L. Towers, Vice-President in charge of Shell Oil Company's fifteen state South-
ern Marketing Region, has been elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Ogle-
thorpe College. Towers assumed the responsibility on February 12th at the Oglethorpe
campus in a ceremony with outgoing chairman, Robert L. Foreman, who remains as a
member of the Board of Trustees after a highly successful tenure as Chairman.

Towers has been serving as Vice-Chairman of the Board and Chairman of the Funding
Committee. His able leadership in these capacities has enabled Oglethorpe to take a
giant stride toward total development. Mr. Towers said, "Since Paul Vonk came to
Atlanta as President of Oglethorpe College, I have become excited by the opportunity
for business leadership to help develop truly outstanding private liberal arts education
in the southland."

Towers, an accomplished musician, is President of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra
and Vice-Chairman of the Atlanta Arts Alliance. He assumes the role as Chairman of
the Board of Trustees after serving on that board since 1965.

Oglethorpe

Receives $128,733

Grant for New

Science Building

Senators Herman Talmadge and Richard Russell have announced a $128,733 Office
of Education grant to Oglethorpe College for construction of a new science building
on the Oglethorpe campus.

Scheduled for completion in early 1970, the new science building will house all the
science departments at Oglethorpe as well as some classrooms, laboratories and facul-
ty offices. Physics, chemistry, biology, medical technology and pre-medical, pre-dental
and pre-nursing courses will be taught in the new facility. Mr. Roy N. Goslin, Professor
of Physics at Oglethorpe and consultant at the Oak Ridge Atomic center, assisted in
the design and layout of the new three story facility.

Kappa Delta,

Chi Omega

Re-Activated

Things are swinging for sorority sisters at Oglethrope College. Kappa Delta Sorority
has re-activated the Alpha Tau Chapter at the college, and the weekend of February
7th will mark the official re-activation of a campus chapter of Chi Omega national
sorority.

Formal installation of Kappa Delta Sorority will take place April 11th, 12th and 13th,
when national officers of the sorority and Kappa Delta chapters from colleges in the
southeast, will attend the festivities.

National Officers of Chi Omega, in association with the Chi Omega alumnae in the
Atlanta area, will combine forces to make official reactivation of the Oglethorpe chap
ter on February 7th, 8th and 9th.

Petrels

Ranked 13th

In Nation

The Oglethorpe "Stormy Petrels" continue on their way to one of their best seasons
ever. The Petrels, with a record of 16-3 are hoping for a bid to the NCAA National
Tournament. If Oglethorpe can prevail in its six remaining games, chances for receiv-
ing a bid with a 22 and 3 record are very good. Oglethorpe has been invited to the
National Tournament two out of the last three years and finished 3rd in the nation in
1963. This year's team compares favorably with the best teams in Oglethorpe's history.

Alumni Day

Plans are being finalized for Alumni Day, May 3, 1969. This will be an opportunity to
see in person the progress that your alma mater is making. A renovated and enlarged
library, a new College Center, a new science building and new women's dormitory
will all be completed or under construction by May 3. Activities of general interest
and information are being planned for everyone. A schedule of events and activities
will be in the April issue of the Flying Petrel. Do make your plans to attend on May 3!

Alumni Dinner
A Success

The Alumni Dinner held on January 23 in the College Center was an overwhelming
success. Over 150 people attended the buffet-dinner prior to the Valdosta State, home-
coming basketball game. Among the alumni and friends attending was Dr. Philip
Weltner, former president of Oglethorpe University. The night was a complete success
after the Stormy Petrels defeated Valdosta as the alumni and the homecoming crowd
cheered them on to victory.

Non-Credit

Courses Scheduled

Again for March

The third session of adult non-credit courses are scheduled to begin the week of March
10, 1969. All Atlanta area alumni will receive a listing of the courses. MANY alumni
have taken advantage of these courses in previous sessions.

Founders Club

Members of the newly organized Founders Club at Oglethorpe will receive a pen set
constructed from wood out of the Lupton Hall auditorium. This wood was taken from
the auditorium when it was renovated in 1968. Membership in the Founders Club is
open to all those alumni who contribute $100 or more to the Alumni Association.
There are currently 23 members of the Founders Club.

ALUMNI DAY MAY 3

Alumni News Dave Barbee, class of 1927, passed away July 1, 1968. At the time he was living in
Albermarle, N.C., but his home was in Greensboro, N.C. He was one of the star players
on Frank Anderson's baseball teams of 1924 and 1925.

George Hiley Slappey, 1928, has been listed in the 22nd edition of Who's Who in
American Education. Mr. Slappey currently resides at 186 The Prado in Atlanta, Georgia.

Col. Samuel L. Finklea, 1938, Air National Guard administrative assistant to the adju-
tant general, has been awarded the U.S. Air Force Commendation medal. He and his
wife, Mary, have four children and reside at Sunview Lake, Columbia, South Carolina.

Captain Thomas W. W. Hewlett, Jr., 1962, is attending the Air University's Squadron
Officer School at Maxwell AFB, Alabama.

Pete and Sally Butchart, 1963 and 62, announce the birth of their third son on Novem-
ber 25, 1968. Pete is the manager of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company retail
store in Sandy Springs and they make their home in Decatur, Georgia.

Captain Mike D. Pickett, 1964, has been decorated with the Air Medal at Seymour
lohnson AFB, N.C. Captain Pickett, a B-52 Stratofortress navigator, received the medal
for his outstanding airmanship and courage on successful and important missions
under hazardous conditions in Southeast Asia.

Second Lieutenant William E. Plowden, Jr., 1967, is attending the Air University (AU)
academic instructor course at Maxwell AFB, Alabama. Lieutenant Plowden was special-
ly selected for the intensive six-week professional training that is conducted as part
of the AU Academic Instructor and Allied Officer School, the teachers college of the
U.S. Air Force.

Management of Mr. William Egerton, professor of management at Oglethorpe College, will present a
Pponlp Spminar seminar entitled "Management of People." Professor Egerton a highly successful man-
" agement and business consultant will conduct the eight week seminar beginning March

5. This seminar is conducted by the Department of Continuing Education at Ogle-
thorpe College.
