- Here, in 1865 Augusta Evans completed her novel St. Elmo, a romance, in part autobiographic. Now, 1928, the home of the youngest grandchild of Allan Hammond of the story. Below the serpentine gravel walk flow the noble springs, long famous as the main source of the original water supply of Columbus---and still tinkle happily in the century old basin in front of the mansion.
