- Fort Frederica was built in 1734 by British forces under the direction of General James Edward Oglethorpe, founder and first Governor of Georgia. This fortification became the military headquarters for the defense of Georgia and the other British Colonies against the Spaniards in Florida and was the most expensive fortification built by the British in North America. Fort Frederica is now a National Monument under the direction of the National Park Service.
