- Description:
- Journal of the Georgia Commissioners negotiation with the Creek Indians at Coleraine.
When the United States government sent a federal commission, led by Benjamin Hawkins, to meet with leaders of the Creek Indians at Coleraine in May-June 1796, the State of Georgia sent commissioners, militia, and a schooner loaded with goods to represent its claims. Georgia hoped to obtain further land cessions to the Ocmulgee River. Instead, the Georgia commissioners at the end of the conference lodged a protest against the regulations governing the conference which limited their efforts in "conciliating the affections" of the Creeks; against the establishment of federal military and trading posts on Creek territory; and against the voiding of the state's treaties of Augusta, Galphinton and Shoulderbone. The journal includes copies of correspondence; minutes of the Georgia commissioners; minutes of the Coleraine commission; and accounts for the goods and commissioners' expenses. The Georgia commission's protest is on pp. 146-154. The journal does not include the text of the federal Treaty of Coleraine. - Metadata URL:
