- Description:
- Juliette (Gordon) Low founded the Girl Scouts of the United States of America in 1912.
Correspondents include Juliette Gordon Low; Eleanor W. McAdoo; James E. Russell; Robert Baden-Powell; Miss Doris S. Hough; Martha Berry; Anne H. Sims; Edith C. Macy; Helen Storrow; Lou Henry Hoover; Jane Deeter Rippin; James West, chief executive of the Boy Scouts of America; Texas Brook, Mrs. T.H. Brook; and Olave Baden-Powell, Lady Robert Baden-Powell. Among the correspondence of 1921 is a letter of January 19 from Eleanor W. McAdoo to Juliette Gordon Low, declining to speak at a Girl Scout conference, and two letters from Robert Baden-Powell, one of which discusses the problem of getting good scout leaders. A letter of November 30, 1921 from Jane Deeter Rippin talks about having a banquet in Atlanta to gain favorable publicity for the Girl Scouts; a reply to this letter (not dated) discounts the idea of the banquet and mentions problems arising from the use of the name Girl Scout. Another letter, from Mrs. Anne H. Sims to Juliette Gordon Low, also discusses a possible name change and who should consider this possibility. A letter of December 31, 1921 from Martha Berry to Juliette Gordon Low declines an invitation to attend the annual convention. Much of the correspondence of 1922 is between Lou Henry Hoover and Juliette Gordon Low. Some letters of June, July, August and December from Lou Henry Hoover talk about visits to various groups of Girl Scouts and Girl Scout camps, the annual convention held in Savannah, the international conference held in Cambridge, England, administrative matters, and the debate over whether to be called Girl Scouts or Girl Guides. A letter from Olave Baden-Powell discusses the trouble over the use of the name Girl Scouts, the international conference of Boy Scouts held in France. Correspondence of September 1922 between Juliette Gordon Low, James West, and Robert Baden-Powell is also concerned with the use of the name Girl Scouts. A letter of February 1922 from Edith Macy to Juliette Gordon Low declines to be a delegate at the international conference. Letters of June 29 and October 11, 1922 from Jane Deeter Rippin to Juliette Gordon Low mention gifts from the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Fun and administrative affairs. A letter to Jane Deeter Rippin from Robert Baden-Powell is a critique of the Brownie Book, which was published in 1922. A letter of August 22, 1922 to Olave Baden-Powell from Juliette Gordon Low invites her to the 1923 annual conference. - External Identifiers:
